The Billyhawks--acoustic Americana

Here's an album I recorded, mixed, and played mandolin on. Recorded the band live all in the same room including the lead vocal and lead guitar. Added harmony vocals later and some lead mandolin later since I was a bit distracted. Acoustic blues, gospel, rock, bluegrass all mixed up. Mastered by Wil...

Using a promotion company for a CD release

Anyone have any recommendations for someone to help promote a CD? Seems like if the band sends it out, it'll probably get lost in the shuffle for reviews and air play. Maybe it has a better chance coming from a promo company with a decent reputation. Waste of money? Your thoughts and recommendations...

Anyone use loudr.fm? It looks like their $15 licensing fee covers all 3 different kinds of licenses.

Where to get licenses without all the processing fees?

A band I'm in recorded a few covers along with our original material. When I went to Harry Fox to get licenses, they charge a $16 processing fee for a license for CDs, another $16 processing fee for a license for downloads, and yet another $16 processing fee for a license for streams. How are they g...

Acoustic instruments with distorted electric guitar

So a band I'm in has been self-recording a mostly acoustic album. 2 guitars, mando, electric bass, drums. Some bluegrass influenced songs, some blues, lots or originals that have an Americana feel. Mostly recorded live all in the same room. Now one guitarist added some distorted electric guitar to s...

If you had said cousin brother, I would have known he was Navajo. :D Actually, I just thought of a studio in Gallup that might work. It's run by Knifewing who has been involved in many different aspects of the Native music scene and pretty active in recording Native artists.. Not sure if he's done a...

Hey ottobot, I live in this area but I'm no pop produca. Mandolin family instruments are my thing. This is a great wasteland of no broadband, very few real studios, and generally "100 miles from nowhere" as Peter Rowan put it in a song. Albuquerque might be his best bet. I'm working with Empty House...

I've got one of those Alesis RA-100 amps too that I'd let go. Shipping from NM. They are heavy.

I've done some recording with Auria and a Presonus 1818vsl. It requires a powered USB hub as well as the Camera Connection Kit for the iPad. I've used it for tracking some live shows, from 8 to 15 tracks (with another interface providing ADAT in) at 24/44.1. Ran just fine. I've since sold the Preson...

I bought the iPad mic stand holder from Monoprice. Seems OK--it does what it's supposed to do and I'm not worried about the ipad crashing to the floor. I bought a few of the spring mic clips too and they seem fine. I'm over cheap mics and cables though.

I used www.bisondisc.com for the last CD I did. We got the CDs in sleeves, but they also do digipacks. Great personal service even though it seems like a big company. Great looking printing on the cover and CD and never had a problem with any disks. Everything got shipped by the dates they promised....

Oktava 012 small diaphram condenser microphone with cardiod and hypercardiod capsules, 10 db pad, and mic clip. This is a genuine Russian made mic that has not been modded. Sounds great on mandolin. $165 Shinybox 46MXL long ribbon mic with Lundahl transformer, Came to my senses, keeping the ribbon m...
