I'm def. not the most experienced guy weighing in here, but FWIW based on that list my first instinct is to put up the TS1 as an XY stereo pair into Ensemble pres for everything, with the musicians in a triangle with URB (playing acoustically only) in the front closest to the mics and guitar back le...

I'm a big fan of the Baby Bottle for horns, vocals, and bass and guitar cabs. And I have been liking the Bottle Rocket Stage 1 either with B7 or Neumann Gefell M7 caps for vocals (that's all I've tried them on thus far). They have produced the best vocal sounds I've gotten thus far with my own gear....

I've been happy with the B7 capsule (B & H photo was selling them new for less than most), and I just got a B4 due to the rebate offer but haven't tried it yet. I don't care for the B8.

I guess I'm in the middle of the range of viewpoints about this. I tend to be open about information and about creative approaches. But if I have what I believe to be an original, or at least unusual (and good) idea, that I want to use in my own work, I will hold back that information until I can do...

Thanks folks. We've got some stuff to think about. I'm starting to realize that I also pretty much want to release all of the tracks we're calling finished, in some way or another. But I think we know that the first hard copy release has special weight and is what we'll be sending out for reviews, s...

Interesting idea Dakota, I may give that a try. That reminds me of a video I saw once of John Cage being interviewed by a professor in front of a live audience at the local art college in the 80s. Cage states up front that the interviewer has to put his questions on paper and put them into a hat, an...

I tend to like albums with "clear identities" too. But that's not always determined by the superficial aspects of genre or whatever; sometimes it's about the tone ("tone" in an emotional sense, not necessarily a sonic sense). Maybe some of your ambient pieces feel right with some of the acoustic so...

Thanks, but that doesn't really exclude any songs as we'll be playing them all live soon enough, and my question is really just intended to be about the recordings. It doesn't look like we'll ever be able to tour or play frequently, most of our potential audience would not be able to hear us live, s...

strategy in selecting tracks for albums ?

I've got this project which I've been working on for a while, where it looks like we'll have about 18 or 20 completed recordings of songs in a couple of months or so. There are a number of largely acoustic songs, several of which are in 3/4 time; and then there are all kinds of others, including a f...

Older M201s will have small teuchel connectors; they like shrunken XLRs but there is a notch/dimple in the ring around the pins. (The ones with "blades" and threads on the outside of the ring are large teuchel connectors.) Beyer mics with model names ending in "N(C)" or "TG" will have XLRs. I have o...

Maybe this isn't small enough for what the OP had in mind, but a Senn MD408 has a small low end while still sounding great higher up. And they're cute. Another thing that comes to mind is playing an electric guitar acoustically while the body is lying on (or touching at the side) an empty suitcase o...

Rather than buying something designed for PA use, I would suggest getting something more like an audiophile friendly hi fi stereo amp and speakers. I believe this was the usual approach in vintage reverb chambers. I don't know what's hip or new in that realm, but there are always some low to middlin...

My favorite Dewey Redman albums as a leader are "Look for the Black Star" (his first, from the 60s) and the duo record with Ed Blackwell "Red and Black In Willisau".

thank you acjetnut and superaction80. I'll bump this or put up a new thread once it's all done and mastered, which is looking like January or February. I figure we'll change up the MP3s at that time too so people can hear a more diverse selection of the finished songs, which will hopefully trigger a...

I'm glad to hear that someone else is using a e609 for vocals. We did that the other night, because I forgot to bring another mic home, and were pleasantly surprised. We haven't used it a lot for that, but it really works, I like it better than a 58 anyway. But now the RE-38 seems to be the dynamic...
