Audio Analysis
An older engineer that I've had to do some work with has been telling me about a program he used to use during mastering for audio analysis. Supposedly you put in a professionaly done store bought CD and the program scans it, then you put in a 2-track mixdown of your own song; which the program scan...

From working live and recorded sound it seems to me that most inexperienced drummers try to keep their time steady by constantly riding the cymbols (i.e. keeping time with their hands) so they can have their feet free to wail on the double kick pedals. I'm not a huge fan of double kicks. Drummers wh...

I prefer the POD 2.0 to the PODxt. The thing that sounds unreal on the XT is the speaker emulations, which I think the 2.0 does better. And I prefer the interface on the 2.0. I also like to use the marshall settings on the POD for my live bass rig. But I didn't have it when I did some recent recordi...

Hang in there. With all the debate about blu-ray versus HDdvd for the next content war nobody is looking over there shoulder at what the guys at apple and sony have up their sleeves. They're making portable harddrives that will be able to play whatever you put on them, now they've got audio, pics, a...

A lot of times I find myself tracking live guitars with the POD 2.0 so that the guitars don't bleed on the drum tracks. But I split the nekkid signal before it gets to the POD and give it it's own track. When i reamp that naked track to the guitarists amp at a later date I usually use the POD again ...

Nady RSM-2 ribbon mic. For being a ribbon under $200 you can get some really natural, open sounds out of it. Line 6 - Pod 2.0, I like the interface on the 2.0 better then the XT. And it costs less. It's great for getting "different" sounds on all kinds of tracks (i like putting horn sounds through t...

I run a G4 12" with an 002/octopre/external firewire 400 drive and haven't had any problems (knock on wood) in over a year and half of this setup. But Im very minimal in my plug-in usage. When I'm mixing stuff that I didn't track I have put almost 2 or 3 plugs on almost every channel a few times and...

I run 6.4 on a G4/002 and haven't had problems with the EQIII yet (knock on wood). But I don't use much in the way of EQ plugs anyway, I try to get my sounds on the way in. When I do need to cut or boost its usually with Nomad Factory's Blue Tubes PEQ-2B. It's a Pultec style EQ thats extremely low o...

Get the control surface!
I have the 002 control surface. I also teach audio students using them. I think it improves mixes a thousand times over when people can get their hands on the dials and faders instead of using a mouse. You stop mixing with your eyes and brain and start using your ears. You still have to use a mouse ...

I tried the danelectro. Didn't work too good. And anyway, I now am in posession of a pretty decent half-track tape deck, an Otari MX-50. So what do I do here? Just slap it into the effects loop and go to town? And as far as putting delay on the whole mix: do I really want to do that with the entire...

I recently made the switch from running digital mixes through real tape to the more practical McDsp Analog Channel 2 for the tape compression/eq. I think it sounds really good, again with most of the plug-ins it may or may not sound exactly like the models of real-world machines they say its suppose...

Personally I love T-rackS. I find that most of the people who bitch about it have only ever tried the presets, but when you actually get past that and are using the gear like you would with hardware (if you have experience mastering on hardware as well) it sounds amazing. I've done A/B's for audioph...
