Topic: record to tape then mix on computer; what are the pitfalls?

I recently did a session where we tracked drums and guitar on my Teac 80-8 machine then dumped to pro tools. I then recorded the piano, bass, and vocals over top. Here is my big warning: for one song we didn't have guitars done but needed to track piano. So i figured why not just bounce drums to dig...

My first tape machine... now what??

Hey everyone, i've been recording for a few years mostly in the digital realm (most recently with m-audio's projectmix) but for some reason i really felt like i needed to discover my roots and figure out how to record in analog. after some research and finding a good deal, i picked up a Teac 80-8 wi...

i thought Ryan's mix sounded incredible! he is extremely talented and seems like a really cool guy. I read that the way RHCP and Rick Rubin decided who would engineer the album was that they chose four people to mix the same three songs, then did a blind listening test and chose which recordings the...

Mastering Question: Moving PQ codes to work in the negatives

Hey everyone, You know how on certain cd's (that you buy) some audio info plays in between tracks, for instance it isn't a part of track 2 or of track 3 but rather in that negative space before track 3 starts. i heard that moving around the PQ codes is the way to achieve this because you have audio ...

Re: What things have you learned recently?

how does recording a quieter signal open up a recording? By not adding excess harmonic distortion. Hey tony thanks for the quick answer... i'm still kind of confused though. So even before the channel clips, there are still amounts of inherent harmonic distortion that are brought out when hot signa...

Re: What things have you learned recently?

1. I've learned more about proper gain structure, to try and record to digital at around -18dBFS. I already understood this to a certain extent, but I would be tempted and be recording closer to -10dBFS or maybe even a little higher. It's amazing how much this simple thing has opened up my recordin...

No bottom head??? Thats like telling a piano player "oh yeah all those black keys... you can't hit those" or sax player "just don't hit those buttons near the bottom." The bottom head accentuates the drums resonance, hence RESONANT HEAD. And what is everyone saying that drums don't sustain long enou...

All of the above suggestions are fantastic and i have used them over the years to get things in phase... but not anymore. If you have ever used more than two mics on anything you have get the Little Labs IBP (in-between phase). With this thing you merely set up the two mics you want to use and get e...

Limited edition AKG C414 LTD... thoughts?

This seems like a ploy to make some extra cash but i was wondering if anyone has used it yet and has heard a difference between this and the XL2. Oh and while we are on it someone give me a run down of how the ULS, XLS, and XL2 are different? How have you guys used your 414's - the "workhorse" micro...
