In our two location small recording business, my partner is close to 40 years my junior, in age. I am a hardware guy. He is a software guy. while we both have knowledge in the other's arena, our two studios echo our interests... The studio location I run is based around cascaded and portable Yamaha...

About the re-amping.

This might be just assumed, but certainly do what you did in the DAW - run two signals, one dirty for voice and one clean and deep for thump. Mic them separately - guitar mic on the dirty amp and a kick mic for the thump.

again, perhaps already the plan.

Have you thought of top/bottom micing the toms. A good ride mic adds some dimension with your hat mic. I've heard it's great for jazz or anything with subtle snare work, the bottom and top micing. I'd imagine that it would be great for just about anything in terms of shaping. What would you conside...

(was thinking about trying one of the tom mics too) . Love 57's on the racks. The guy i share a space with has 2 421s, and for months i've been trying to get good tom sounds with them with no luck. (I think they may BOTH be broken? They look like were used in demolition work) IDK, i just throw up 5...

Good to hear this from all of you, I've recently ventured into more complex mic'ing situations so I'm trying to absorb info. I gotta be careful what I read ;) Also, due to popular demand I got rid of my avatar. It wasn't as funny as I thought it was last year or so. Okay, I still find it awesome but...

kind of what I was thinking. I've seen some setups with pretty expensive mics on the kick. Why would someone put a valuable mic at risk like that? Doesn't make sense.

kick drums ruining mics for use with anything else?

I read that once a mic is used on a kick drum, it should always be used on kick drums because of the way the high pressure levels alter the mics ability to pick up higher frequencies. I never heard of this before.

Anyone care to throw in their 2 cents?

go forth and make magic! lol The cheap mics I mentioned in the previous post I picked up used for 100 bucks for the set. I thought, "why the hell not I'll give em a try." It's an Audio Technica set - 2 MB 4ks for OH, 3 MB 5ks for toms, MB 6k for kick. Gonna add an sm57 for snare (was thinking about ...

as far as snare sound, try moving the mic off the drum a bit. a 57 right up on the head is just gonna sound like a dull timbale. try it a couple inches up over the top head and aim it across the head, not pointing down. you can also try micing the shell as well/instead. +1. I think mics right up on...

The piano sounds good to me, but if you want it brighter I'd tweak the eq. Sweep a narrow band across the upper mids and highs at 4 or 5db and identify what you want to hear more of, then scale it back down again and adjust the bandwidth until it sounds "right." I hope I've explained what I'm thinki...

permission to make music

Every once in awhile I hit a creative wall on account of self doubt and "gear envy". I'm a musician and hobbyist sound guy, and I don't have alot of "pro" gear to work with. Lately I've been agonizing over my cheap mics, DAW interface, my stompboxes, my room, my monitors etc etc etc.... I ran across...
