Re: What drummers should know when you are recording them

minor flamming between different elements of a kit are what destroy drum tracks, i'd say. if the right hand is keeping time on a cymbal, that kick NEEDs to fall on those beats. the hat played with the foot needs to hit at the same time as the snare...etc. This is true but an oversimplification. Obv...

The Meters rule. One thing though, everyone likes to talk about what a great drummer Ziggy Modaliste is, and he is. But what makes the band so special was the bassist: George Porter Jr. The man created more great, catchy, danceable bass lines than Bootsy Collins and Busta Jones combined. And he used...

In all things, INCLUDING audio, you get what you pay for. It is not a fun pill to swallow... I have nothing but admiration for your work, but I think that the notion of more$$=higher quality is false in the present environment. For an extreme example, xhip is a free VSTi plugin that is as good as m...

I hate metronomes, but am cool with drum machines. Metronomes are confusing if a song is busy and syncopated, whereas a drum machine can be programmed to go with whatever groove you want it to. And of course it keeps perfect time as well. Drum machine-type plugins are free everywhere these days (unl...

One of the BEST arguements I've heard for having 'pros' work on your music all around was made by a major market radio programmer & major lable A&R mook a few years ago when we were on a recording panel with a few other guys at an indie music conference; "If you don't care enough to have your music...

I will take the plunge and admit it. Tape is cool, and it will always have a place, but I like digital more. I hate tape noise, I hate scratches and pops, I hate the preciousness of having to clean the lp every time I listen to it, I hate expensive cartridges, stylii and tone arms. One huge PITA. Vi...

Re: Goddamned Frank Sinatra

Almost as good in a very different mood is Songs for Swingin' Lovers (1956). (His original version of Ive Got You Under My Skin, the highlight for me of At the Sands, is here.) That song gives me the shivers. Pop music just does not get better than that. Thanks for the book reference.

I think most of the early Zappa stuff sounds pretty crappy, recording-wise. zappa, uuuuhhhgggg, i never got the joke with him. I think with the exception electric jamima his records suck So have you listened to them all? Try perhaps "The Perfect Stranger" (played by the Ensemble Intercontemporain) ...

mind -- Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Hendrix, Sly Stone -- and none of these guys really gave a shit what the Beatles were doing, all of them were breaking rules, and forging their own paths. Actually, all of those guys were acutely aware of what was happening around them and applied what they liked. ...

Re: F@$K the F@$king Beatles!

The Beatles couldn't sing all that great, but they wrote about a hundred timeless songs that people will probably be singing in a hundred years, although I don't like them that much. That Patton guy may have an okay voice, but I've never heard anything by him that I think will last all that long. T...

Roger Nichols Digital???

So Roger Nichols has apparantly bought out Elemental Audio software, changed the guis on their plugins, and doubled the price without adding any new functionality.

Read about the hilarious consequences here.

A clash of generations as it were.

Re: F@$K the F@$king Beatles!

I'm not all that crazy about the Beatles, but when you compare them to some of the other no-talent shit I read about in tapeop or this forum (e.g., Mike Patton in the current issue), they become alot more appealing. So someone having a really powerful, note-perfect voice with a huge range is 'no ta...

tape machine maintenance supplies??

I have just inherited an old deck and was wondering where to buy things like head demagetizers, head cleaning solution, capstan oil, syringes, etc.

Are there any online suppliers that you folks know of?

Thanks in advance for your help.
