bumping this topic

Hi, I am still searching for an answer to the line noise / ground hum issue I am having. I took my Tascam 688 in to a local repair shop here in SF, and the tech is claiming that the issue is with my XLR cables. The issue is that when monitoring back from TAPE, I am hearing a buzzing sound when the u...

Need a tech who can work on a Sony Pro Walkman WM-D6C

I have an old one of these that is working well I would just like to bias it for the tdk tapes that I use and not the Sony ones that are no longer made. I also am possibly interested in modifying the unit to monitor from the record head instead of the input as I am noticing a big difference in the r...

Better to compress TO tape, or POST?

Hi everyone. I realize this is one of those questions where there's not likely to be a catch-all answer, but I thought I'd ask it anyways. The question being, If you're going to compress a sound, say a vocal or a guitar, is it better to do it TO tape, or coming back out? More to the point, are there...

Tascam 688 & Ground Hum Problem

Hi everyone.. I just recently bought a Tascam 688 on eBay, and after several months, I finally had a free moment to plug it in, and it seems that I am getting a ground hum from the main outputs, which are RCA. I checked to make sure it wasn't the cables or my other mixer or monitor setup, by pluggin...

Re: cubase/protools etc

I was trying to be tongue and cheek about go ahead and do it (pirated software)... here's the deal with that, man. If you use pirated software, it ends up hurting you in the end. Yeah yeah, I know - you don't have the money. But you probably DO have the money, or could get it, if it was a priority f...

Re: tips needed for realistic percussion grooves w/ sampling

That's too bad then, there is nothing wrong with disagreeing - that can be valuable in fact. I think maybe the drum machine approach CAN work - in fact Squarepusher I think does this more or less - but he's quite a sophisticated programmer, and he also has a jazz drumming style, which is more him. I...

Re: tips needed for realistic percussion grooves w/ sampling

Um, I'm perfectly happy to be doing my own thing, I don't want to copy anyone else. But for the record, all the drum grooves on Music Has the Right to Children are incredible... That level of craft is what I aspire to, for sure.

Re: Thoughts on Q-base.

People who slag on Cubase don't know what they're talking about and most certianly don't actually use it themselves. It's very trendy in the DAW world to slag other DAWs as being inferior to theirs in a similar way that Windows and Apple weenies squabble over which OS is better. The sad fact is they...

Re: tips needed for realistic percussion grooves w/ sampling

Thanks for all the replies. I do however disagree that what BOC and Autechre do being 'easy' as just 'timestretching and fuk'n it up'. I happen to know that what both these bands do is not easy or straight-forward, as evidenced by how unique their sounds are to this day - in other words, other artis...
