OK, you guys rock! I just got an SP-303 with a 64 MB chip off eBay for $158, so I figure you all saved me $121. So I guess I owe some virtual beers?

On behalf of the entire genre of live rock and roll, I thank ye.

Inexpensive Sampler/Sequencer for Playing Live

Hello, I've got a live band project going. We're playing our songs to synth sequences in the Korg Electribe EMX-1. We'd like to have this trigger audio samples, via beatclocks, from another sampler/sequences that's slaved. Do you know of any boxes that'll do this? We need about 30-60 seconds of mono...

What is Aple care? and why do I need it? Please forgive my ignorance. I've been recording on tape up until this year when I finaly broke down and got the 002 rack to finish a project and have liked my jump into the digital world so far. ( late bloomer huh?!) I just used my houshold PC so far and it...

I've got one of the last PowerBook G4s - 1.5Gigs that works great for audio. I'm of the opinion to NOT buy the first version of any new radical change in a product (like the MacBook). I think I recall stories of battery packs catching fire in years past, bugs, etc. The other thing to remember about ...

I have vinyl from 1948 that plays fine.

I have cassettes from 1979 that play fine.

I have CD-Rs from 1998 that won't play.
Is there any way to bake CD-Rs?

Seriously, though, I heard sharpie ink on CD-Rs will increase the depreciation rate.

I try to live by the advice of the very first studio owner I worked for: Never sell a synth. Or any instrument for that matter. I know life circumstances often don't allow for it (i.e. poverty), but I think it's a good idea. His best example was the Juno 106, which sat in his studio for years and th...

Cable TV in another room can help, too! I think it's the producer's job to keep the session rolling and keep distractions at bay. If the band doesn't have a producer, then depending on the group and the situation, I would say something to keep things going, and/or just roll with it, have fun and try...

We had a hard core stoner intern for a while as well, who eventually got fired for showing up to work, one too many times, way too baked to function effectively. But one of his major mistakes: He was asked by a visiting engineer to see if he could raise the near field monitors a few inches higher fr...

It may sound obvious, but any great player with a great sounding instrument is much easier to get a kiiller sound. I first realized this when I first recorded a drummer who actually knew how to tune his drums.

For me, getting convincing claps is always a challenge.

Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess
Willie Nelson - Teatro
Suzanne Vega - Nine Objects of Desire

Also, someone here once gave me the tip of using verb on your scratch vocal take at 100% to fatten out vocals a little. Yeah, I've heard this trick referred to as "ghosting" and I use it quite a bit. To be more specific, I take the vocal track out of the main bus and just aux send it to a nice verb...

I will often double the kick drum if the original recording isn't all that hot. I try to pick a sample that best "complements" the original track. If the original kick lacks attack, I'll put in a sample that has a good one. If it lacks "oomph," I'll put in a sample to fill that in and roll off the h...

I have no idea if this will sound any good, but I just saw a write up on a USB Turntable:

At the very least, it seems like it'd make ripping vinyl simpler!
