Ribbon Mysteries
I am becoming more and more intrigued by the wealth of ribbons that Asia is exporting. Being that there are close to 422 models available, I was wondering if any of you would care to shed some light here. Ideally I want a pair to use as drum OH, ac guitar, etc. Not vox. Going for that motown sound. ...

What are all the Adat/SPDIF options for a Digi002?
I know this topic has been covered quite a bit on this forum, after doing a pretty lengthy search I'm still unsure if the unit I want is even out there. Ideally, I just want 8 channels of A/D and 2 of D/A at 24/48 to connect to my Digi002. I don't want any included preamps (unless they can be bypass...

Thanks for the long post, llmonty. I am interested in getting some type of Ampex/Altec pre...you say you have the 601. How do you find it? And you're on the right track with the instruments. Our practice space is loaded to the gills with half-working stuff. Any suggestions out there on compressors? ...

Definitely feeling you on the quality vs. quantity, what would you suggest for monitoring and DA? I want to stay in PT land for ease of transfer to the big studio. Apogee probably? I don't want to spend too much...dumping 2k on converters certainly isn't as fun as getting a shiny new mic or a vintag...

Dropping 10k on project studio...help
My band is piecing together a project studio. I did quite a bit of work on our first demo back in '05 with a few odds and ends I borrowed. We recorded our album proper in '06, but I was more focused on writing/arranging than being behind the desk or worrying about gear. So I'm kind of out of the loo...

Searching for Midwestern Studio with Neve 80 series....
My band is mixing in the spring and our engineer prefers a Neve 80 console...we're from Iowa and would like to mix close to home. Thanks in advance for the help!

Doug Van Sloun - Studio B
Couldn't really find a particular forum for this -- so this seems well enough. Just wanted to put in a good word for this fellow...he does all of the Saddle Creek stuff as well as alot of midwest bands. He just did my band's latest EP and it sounds fantastic. He is definitely about bucking current m...

For toms, I generally go for an open sound...not muffly, the tom will ring a distinct note. For live, I go with Remo Emporers, they last longer and the sound difference isn't noticeable given the situation. For studio, though, definitely single ply, Remo Ambassadors, either coated or clear. Coated f...
