This was at least 20 years ago but to the best of my memory they sounded as good as a lot of other vintage tube mic preamps that people seem to be coveting thee days. Like the old Altec and RCA units they have colorations, but this seems to be the draw for many people. Certainly good enough for pro ...

An NTK should not be a boxy sounding mic. They are temperamental about preamps and maybe this is the issue. Expensive, "hip" pieces of gear aren't always the best in any given situation. An NTK that is working up to snuff into the right preamp can get a beautiful, "open" acoustic sound. The issue co...

Years ago I replaced a couple of the Beyers in someone's unit with Jensen 115KE's. The Beyers have a sweet high end but saturate very easily. The Jensens are clear and clean and more extended at both ends of the spectrum. The improvement was not subtle. Don't forget to take out any networks which co...

Hey, don't sweat it. Good mixes can be done on sub $500 monitors. Just have to be a little extra careful. You might also check out a used pair of Tannoy PBM's. Any of these will have compromises, but you can live with them. Just make sure you check your mixes on several other systems (maybe in the c...

I have a buddy with the older passive YSM1's. I was pretty impressed, even though I have some very nice monitors. Since we were working together on stuff alot at the time I thought I'd get myself a pair so we would have a somewhat common reference. By that time the originals weren't available. So I ...

I just read the interview. I am 52 years and got started in electronics back in the late 60's. I was ecstatic to see someone who remembers Alfred P.Morgan. He had a book called the "Boy's First Book of Radio and Electronics" that drew me into an incredible world like a moth to a flame. He subsequent...

Any Model T from the 70s (not the 90's Fender re-issue) that is working properly should have uber cahones in the low bass department. Doesn't matter that it was designed for guitar. Either you're speakers/cabinet aren't right for the sound you are looking for, your bass needs work.or you've got a ba...

I've worked on more than a few of these over the years. They can be modified to sound "pretty good" but they ain't no Tube Tech or RCA BC2 or whatever. They do sound "tubey" and have loads of "vibe". There are actually some better better "unknown" tube mixers that routinely sell on e-bay for next to...

I had an ADAT XT20 for a while (still have it though it doesn't work). It is possible to make good sounding recordings on them (remember there were loads of albums/CDs cut on these things in the 90's). But they are very dodgy when it comes to reliability. Mine was maintained about as good as can be ...
