While the noise has gone down, and the treble has gone up, lots of elements are lost. Dynamics, spatial reference, and clear/solid bass response are still major issues with many recordings done ad-hoc, and it shows... Word... double-word on the dynamics and spatial reference losses. Oh, you know, t...

Re: Rock albums tracked live (in the same room)?
I'm sitting here listening to Don Caballero's American Don. It sounds pretty live in some ways, but other aspects of it sound like there was significant isolation involved (iso booths?). There are some pretty awesome sounds in this record though. The challenge of tracking music this loud all in the...

I know what you mean - I feel "behind the times" because I make local recordings on a 1/4" 8-track - and they sound like it. I just happen to like the sound of local bands that have "good crappy recordings"... ...does that make any sense? a "good crappy recording" to me is something that may not be ...

I've heard of using them for a nice, clean delay for pushing room mics back etc. Haven't really tried it yet. I use mine for already stated purposes - bouncing from my 388 to 3 or 4 tracks instead of only 2, "field" recordings, and (literally) doorstop. My lx20's were simply too unreliable to use - ...

I called a mix "done" the other night without listening, and I have a baaad feeling its going to sound like crap. But - it was 2:30 in the morning and I had work at 7am the next day, so... This is essential especially to people like me that work in shitty rooms with shitty b-ringer monitors. ...

"the drums are perceived as louder because the sustain of the drums is now louder in reference to the transients" Just wanted to say thank you for putting that in such simple terms. I often find myself frustrated saying "like...uhh...its...uh..." and making vague hand gestures when I'm trying to exp...

Tim Berne's Bloodcount
Please tell me someone else on here digs this shit. I LOVE the "Unwound" box - the recording sounds so unique for a jazz record - especially _We're Only In It For The Food_. As far as I know, they only used a pair of mics, and David Torn mastered it. Anybody [yous NY guys] know anything else? -Wiggi...

The trick with that genre is getting eveything to be louder then everything else. Or at least letting every instrument think that it's the loudest thing in the mix. Exxxxxxactly! Or you could take the more novel approach... Let the band sound like the band. Warts & all. After all it's their record....

I (have to) record "pop punk" bands with moderate frequency. The kid that owns the studio with me plays in one. I've heard some great drum sounds on records like that that don't sound over-compressed or dry. Try to find a used copy of this record: No Knife - Riot for Romance http://image.allmusic.co...

I know this is "Tape Op" and everything that costs less than a cup of coffee is supposed to be mounted on the East wall of the studio and prayed to 5 times a day... but [/b]... I was talking to a friend last night who tried one of the RSM's. He didn't know what they were using for a ribbon material...

I've come to the conclusion that if you play for someone the first 30 seconds of "Frownland" by Cap't Beefheart and they dont make a mad dash to the record player to break it over their knee, then they get it. If they do, and you're out $25 for a new copy of Trout Mask, then don't bother showing the...

Saxophones can be kind of tricky as well - often comes out brighter than the players prefer. (At least the saxophonists I've worked with - I suppose if you like the Sanborn tone, than bright is what you want.) I recorded a jazz band for the first time last week (drums/bari. sax/bass clar.) and the ...
