I wish someone would have the balls to ask John about Colossamite. Or Gorge Trio. Deerhoof's great n' all, kinda went downhill the last two albums if you ask my snobby ass, but Colossamite? He's probably embarrassed about it, but I fucking adore everything about that band. Y'all should check them ou...

This is just hearsay, but I hear from my friend who is one of those nerds on talkbass.com that Tim is really really secretive about details of his rig. There's talk of him custom-winding his pickups, etc. I've also heard he runs 2 amps, and 2 SVT cabs, one clean, one dirty and blends them to taste. ...

Normal crashes just plain don't have enough decay, unless you're playing terribly fast, or quietly. It really depends on the music, as with all things. Dale Crover would be fired from a pop-radio band after the first rehersal, but (just for sake of example) Mick Fleetwood or whatever would probably ...

Help: converting cheap 1/4" 2-track to reel echo? anyth
Is it possible? My friend gave me an old 1/4" machine he found in a parking lot (!!!). Looks like it's 1960's-ish, consumer-grade like silvertone or something. I've been trying to figure out how I can use it as a reel echo or ...well, something cool. So far, I made some sort of neat sounds as an int...

From what I've read, and what I've been told, no, it won't. Or, at least it won't be M-S. It'd be something different. Not to mention more difficult than using a perfectly fine X-Y pattern. The side-rejection of the figure-8 pattern is what allows this to work, I think. Rejection on cardoid patterns...

and it will still cost you $35 for a review of those etchings. haha! Hey man, I'm just sayin! And "just sayin" ain't gonna change anything, anyway. I hardly think Analog recording is obsolete - good recordings are still made with tape, to much the same commerical success and fidelity that records m...

I've read an article about how the Church of Scientology has bought up all the DMM laquer lathes in order to press L. Ron Hubbard's 'teachings' to gold phonograph discs, and place them in a time capsule with a mechanical hand-crank phonograph player. Wouldn't it be grand if, 2000 years from now, th...

Just to be sure everybody's got their everything straight, my understanding was that Quantegy's reel-to-reel tape was still producing a profit. What drug them under was the video tape market. I also thought I saw a thread about someone starting production of reel-to-reel tape again. That's right. Q...

I'll probably be called all different shades of "crackpot" for saying this, but a big concern of mine is the permanence of digital media - on a very long time scale. Let's pretend together, just for a moment: ================ (< that means wavy dream-sequence thingys.. you know what i'm talking abou...

I'm probably not the best person to answer considering my inexperience, but I always mix with the band present, though it's not always necissary. A lot of bands I record aren't too picky, and are just using me for a demo/generally don't have ears. I always need to ask about vocal levels. I realize t...
