Re: Check in Thread

I feel despondent. I spent most of my day yesterday bouncing between working on a podcast for my job (public library) and pacing around my property not knowing what to do. This is so rough. I watched a live feed of a close friend running from the police last night with tear gas in the background. It...

Re: Coronavirus Health Precautions for Studios

I'm starting to get into the same situation here. Recording studios were permitted to reopen last week and I've already had some calls about it. I'm in no rush at all though. My room (a repurposed garage) is too small to effectively distance and the washroom facilities are in my house. Beyond that,...

Re: Coronavirus Health Precautions for Studios

NYS has been in phase 1 of re-opening (which is incredibly limited in scope) for a couple weeks and I'm already getting hit up for sessions. Like, the minute Cuomo lifted a minimal amount of restrictions, people are taking that as "welp, looks like we're outta the woods, let's just start hanging out...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I probably wouldn’t do again, if I had the extra $$ Ha, I agree. those parts are so tiny it's really tough not to F-- them up. I killed one (trying to go too fast) and they are just not good candidates to unsolder and repair. Just had to buy another kit and start over. :-( I've built around 8 or 10...

FS: Focal Solo6 Be pair

Hey all, Selling a couple things. Focal Solo6 Be pair - $2250 shipped - Bought in 2018. Great speakers, just not my ideal pair. There are a few small scratches on the bottom of one of them, but the other is virtually mint. Come in original boxes, protective covers on the tweeters, w/ IEC's & manual....

A thread on DI (bass and guitar) by someone who knows what they are talking about would be very cool.
I have a feeling that genre, and more importantly the player are the 2 major factors, then having a good sounding DI. Otherwise it's just plugging into a thing.

Re: Neve flavor

The only DI I've ever used where I felt happy using the track as the main representation of the bass in the mix was through either a Hamptone JFET or the HVTP. Scott nailed it with those. Otherwise, zzzzzzzzz. Sansamp is sometimes cool too. In my previous post, I'm definitely talking about mic'ing ...

Re: Neve flavor

there can be so much variation between "how" a bass is recorded that it doesn't surprise me people get different results. Is the bass plugged directly into a 1/4" DI jack on the pre? Or is it through a DI box connected to the mic/XLR input? Or mic'ing a cab? I have plugged a bass into a DI jack and...

Re: Neve flavor

same here, recorded a couple records at a super high end studio and he ran the bass through API and i hated it. the mids were just ugh, no thank you. LOL, APIs are not really for Bass though... for electric guitars they can be stellar. Also, it's the driver, not the car, in most cases. It's interes...

Re: Neve flavor

I'm honestly never blown away when I use API preamps. I'll take a Neve (or neve-like thing), Chandler or Daking any day over API. The best non-Neve "neve" I've used is the Hairball Copper. Once in addition to 14 channels of vintage 1073/1066. They are for real. I have 2. If I needed a lot of preamps...

Anybody using clipping plug ins? Where does it go in your chain of processing?

I'm gonna demo Standard Clip and see it does anything useful in this regard...
No, but you just reminded me that I've been meaning to try this one....

Re: mastering tricks for gaining level

I've been curious about the same thing lately, because like you, some folks have been asking me to "master" their stuff. I make sure to put the word "master" in quotes when I respond, because I am def. not a mastering engineer. In lieu of that, I do what you do, but I don't have one of those maximiz...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

i've been in 100% mix mode since the lockdown so I've been tempted to buy some new plugins... I did pick up a few of the Kush audio ones on their 420 sale... The Omega transformer plugins are pretty cool little colouring boxes and the Novation Compressor is so far also impressive as a tone shaping ...

Also, if you are mixing in a DAW, you can automate this sweeping filter, even bypass it, in certain places where you want more of that thumpiness.
This reminds me that a dynamic EQ or multiband compressor would probably be a smart move.
