Re: The Bad Plus

LOVE them! They kinda lost me when they started working with that vocalist, but otherwise, brilliant. I got hooked on them from The Happy Apples, right around the time that first album came out. Chris Garges Charlotte, NC Agree. The vocalist was a turnoff for me as well, but "Suspicious Activity" a...

Re: Recording Mac in 2019

My experiences running PT on a mac mini have been pretty awful, BUT, the one I was trying it on was an older model so I'm guessing the specs have improved rather dramatically between then and now. I've been using a Macbook pro for the past couple years, because I need the mobility and it's been [mos...

Hamptone JFET 500 series
2x Hairball Lola (have to build them still)

EDIT: built the DIY 990 opamps. JESUS H. "Op amps aren't so bad." he says. Anyways. That was a tense couple of hours.

Re: Monitor dilemma

Yea, I agree that the NS10 is not the best choice. I realize people do good mixes on them, but they sound like shit and if you're going to be sitting in front of a pair of speakers for hours, you should enjoy it a little.

Re: Monitor dilemma

You could find a used pair of Dynaudio BM5A's for less than that probably. I used them for years. They're solid. Upgraded since, but I still have them.

Re: AML ez1073?

the kit looks like it would cost just under $700 with VAT and shipping crazy good if it sounds like a 1073 looks like it doesn't have a DI and that's prob one of my fav things about that style of channel strip I was referring to this one: http://www.audiomaintenance.com/acatalog/aml-17-038_extended...

AML ez1073?

Anyone have experience with these? Would like to hear about them, if so. Kits are very affordable. From what I can tell, they seem legit.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

a pair of Chandler Little Devil mic pres - loving them so far. only used on two sessions - guitars last weekend, kick and guitar this weekend. Haven't noticed the "bright" switch doing much, but maybe the feedback knob being cranked negates the boost a bit? Haven't tried those, but I did have a pai...

2x Louder Than Liftoff Stage II (Royal Blue) 500 modules. They had a sale, so I took advantage. So far, they're pretty rad. I'm trying them out on mix buss for a heavy project. The ability to vary the amount of the 4.8k shelving boost on the Royal Blue amp block is pretty sick. A very small amount o...

Re: 500 series racks - how much power do I need?

I love my Sweet 10. I think it's pretty forward thinking. It's the only one I have any experience with though, so can't speak to the others. Seems like the Radial could be cool. At this point, I don't think I'd get anything other than the Purple though, should I need a second (I will haha).

Sounds like a grounding issue to me. Did you pop the XLR connector out to make sure the wires are all attached? That'd be my first move.

John Vanderslice's studio Tiny Telephone, wow. That dude and studio seem awesome, his recording philosophy and studio philosophy (free tape, free weed, free coffee) is sweet. i need to make a record there one day.
I thought it seemed rather utopian myself. Would love to go there.

Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!

I think the best drum sound I've ever gotten was something similar to this. It was an M160 aimed between the toms at the snare, but further out, next to the side of the bass drum. That plus a kick drum mic. It's as close to a dirty vintage kit sound as I've ever gotten.
