Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

What's the preamp that makes you think "I wish I had a whole console full of these"... If I was actually buying a console, Daking. No question. The EQ is outrageously good, pre rules. would gladly sell all my other shit, except... Hamptone. Fucking great. They don't seem to be talked about here lik...

Coles are really nice and thick and capture surprising amounts of thump from toms/kick/snare
Probably best case scenario.

On the "cheaper" side of things, sE VR1's would probably be pretty sweet too. I use them as OHs a lot and love em for that.

Re: Drum OH's, only

I've always gotten great results from an m160 over by the drummer's right shoulder, aimed at the snare. Gets a nice blend of the whole kit, a nice low mid thump from the kick. Takes compression and eq really well. That and a kick mic is a great two mic setup. yea, same. I love an M160 over the shou...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I'm in like a "how is this real?" phase still, but... 1975 U87 Lomo 19A19 (unsure of the date, but if any of you know how I could figure that out, I'd love to know) FCS P3EX 2x Auditronics 501 racked up and courtesy of Joel and Studio G Ampex 350 Retro Revolver Hairball Blue Stripe & 2x Bronze (stil...

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up

I'd much rather be at home with my wife and our cat. Same. We have very little desire to go out and see shows any more, I think we maybe saw one show all last year, and we left early. Anyway I haven't added anything up yet, but I'm pretty sure last year was my best ever, if not it was very close, a...

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up

I worked on a few really cool records this year, and am proud of my growth as an engineer, but if I'm being honest this year was maybe the biggest damn slog of 'em all. Between moving my personal residence twice, setting up shop in a place run by someone who was way out of his depth and who refused ...

Re: Daking service

The best. I've sent emails to Geoff directly and gotten a phone call within the hour more than once. He is generous with his time and happy to explain things and answer questions. He's also spent time on the phone with my local tech to help him fix one of my mic pre / eq's when the tech was stumped,...

Re: amps vs. simulators

Every time I see a sound guy put a mic in front of a guitar amp with my bands I tell them "you won't need that". they don't usually believe me until the end of the night when they realize they never actually used it. and I think the bass DI is just there to make the kick drum sound muddy in the mai...

Re: amps vs. simulators

yes honestly proper touring amps and cabs are just for show, because any decent venue (even small ones) the crowd doesn't hear the amp, they hear the PA/FOH and those speakers and what the FOH person does. So it's mostly a vanity thing. Even when i was touring i was In Ears and the amp sometimes i ...

Re: amps vs. simulators

Nice cabs! If I was ever playing bass live again on a regular basis, I think I'd build a little posse of individual 10's I could stack up. As a live sound guy I've found the smaller the bass amp, the better the sound for the audience. i have found the issue is all the ported cabs. they have just wa...

The adrenalin rush was amazing! The pain didn't kick in until maybe 10 minutes AFTER!
The body really gives you an assist when you need it. I've dislocated my shoulder a few times and that 10 mins is everything.

this actually sounds pretty good... https://www.uaudio.com/uad-plugins/delay-modulation/waterfall-rotary-speaker.html and takes up a lot less space. . https://media.uaudio.com/assetlibrary/w/a/waterfall_rotary_pdp_feature3_1.jpg I was going to suggest this. I use it on all kinds of stuff. The Roto ...

Re: amps vs. simulators

... SO, the way I see it is you have a perfectly good tone for tracking direct, but then you can reamp it later on AND also have the DI preserved so you can use the STL thing as a supplemental layer. I am a big fan of getting the FINAL sound with the guitarist / bassist / instrumentalist in the ses...

Re: delivery resolutions for digital

I keep it at whatever the tracking settings are the entire time. I don't see any point in even thinking about it at this point since every streaming service can handle whatever you upload and if it's going to a mastering engineer I would keep it there anyway. It's annoying to render at different set...

Re: amps vs. simulators

In the metal world, so many people are using simulators now. Personally, I still find them sterile sounding, and I also find a lot of modern metal production sterile as fuck as well. I can't tell if that's just me being "stuck in my ways" and not being up with the modern sound, or not. I agree, the...
