Re: Recording Vocal Tracks without headphones
I've done this with my band quite a few times. Singer hates headphones, and rightfully so. SM7b, rear pointed at speakers, dead centered. Just make sure the vocal is drowning out all or at least most of the bleed when actually singing and if needed, cut the space out between the vocals. Never regret...

Re: Hi/Low Pass with resonance
IDK how I forgot about the Lo-Rider feature on the LTL Chop Shop plugin. It def does the thing.

Re: Let's talk about layering vocal harmonies
I just did this recently with Soundtoys Crystallizer. We were tracking vocals, so the singer was there. He couldn't quite find the interval he was looking for, so I pulled the plugin up to scroll through some different ones. Once we found the harmony he was after he thought it sounded rad (I agreed)...

Re: how much snare do you want (or not want) in your overheads
I battle with this a lot. I don't like a lot unless I'm using 4038's and most of the kit is coming from those. One thing that's been helpful, is I use the Fabfilter Saturn on the tape setting to basically chop the snare off without adding any really obvious distortion to the cymbals. It works pretty...

Re: A drum bus compressor odyssey
It seems every year for the past 10 years, i'm looking at an Empirical Labs FATSO or the UBK version for similar desires. It has completely taken over my desire for a pair of Distressors. Hell, i'm not even interested in Distressors anymore. Try the Kush plugin version. It's hard to rein in, but fo...

Re: OT: Albini Does It AGAIN!
I get what your saying, but Silver has a special place in my heart and Billy's production is a big part of it. Enemy, Silver, and Times are my most favorite records of theirs. And Times is fucking incredible, but I think Silver needed to happen with Billy. I hear you. I don't think TSIB sounds bad ...

Re: OT: Albini Does It AGAIN!
I put on a Neurosis record the other night, wondering "did Steve do this one?" As soon as the drums came in: "Yep". If there was ever an appropriate pairing, it's him and that band. I wish Steve did "Through Silver in Blood". The jump in how crushing their records sound from that to "Times of Grace...

Re: Reverb flavors
In Re "distorted reverb", I've done a couple of records where I sent the vocals ("evil" screamy black metal stuff) out to a silvertone 1482 in an iso booth, and used the vocals through that as my reverb send. That's sick. I need to try something like that. It'll be interesting to hear the differenc...

Re: Hi/Low Pass with resonance
I have the same sort of reaction to the Soundtoys thing. If I'm trying to do a hi/low pass thing I pretty much just want 2 knobs to turn. There are some presets that do most of the heavy lifting. "drum fattener" or whatever. I ended up only having to adjust the frequency/amount of resonance and the...

Re: Hi/Low Pass with resonance
I've messed with this on the Pro-Q3. Sharp filter jacked up like 20db with the Q control, use the dynamic feature to keep it from getting out of hand. Has worked on a kick drum here and there. I'm embarrassed that I've never fucked with the Soundtoys in this way. I just opened a session and tried so...
