The farting is coming from the source. Move your butt further from the mic.

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

sounds like a couple nice scores there. What would you be compressing with said compressor? ...I think another stereo compressor like the Daking FET III or something would maybe be more versatile for tracking and mixing... Never used a FET III, but the FET II is one of the all-time greats. It was m...

Re: Mic pre in pedal form?

I think Electro Harmonix made something like that. Maybe called 12ay7. Joel Hamilton was into it for a while I think. You might be able to search and find it. 12AY7 is correct. It's in the same enclosure as the other tube guitar / bass pedals, but it has its own power supply and is a real mic pream...

Re: Can excessive preamp gain damage ribbon mic?

If it goes away when you back off the gain, it's probably just that when you crank the pre you're getting distortion from overdriving the input of the preamp. I've recorded acoustic guitars and resonators with my M160 quite a few times and I can pretty much guarantee you're not hurting the mic at al...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Just bought a bunch of mic stands and boy was I rethinking my life choices when it came time to push "complete order" and saw the total. Anyways. They're nice. I'm sick of bullshit cheap stands that sag and rattle and break every other session. Can you share what you got? I just got an EV RE20 mic,...

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

441 or M160 usually.

I always ask the player where the best sound is coming out, because it's usually not the bell, but be wary of picking up too much of the keys clacking. Why I never use an LDC and also why the really precise directionality of these 2 mics comes in handy.

Re: Drum OH's, only

Probably best case scenario. On the "cheaper" side of things, sE VR1's would probably be pretty sweet too. I use them as OHs a lot and love em for that. Been on my "want list" for awhile now. A pair of Coles is never going to happen. Get 3 because when I use my pair for OH's, I miss having one for ...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

I just posted another response to someone recommending Hamptone, and I think that's a really good idea—probably the front-runner in my mind right now. I'm undecided on whether to go JFET or tube though. Since you have both, do you have any suggestions? I love em both so it's hard to pick which is b...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

What's the preamp that makes you think "I wish I had a whole console full of these"... If I was actually buying a console, Daking. No question. The EQ is outrageously good, pre rules. would gladly sell all my other shit, except... Hamptone. Fucking great. They don't seem to be talked about here lik...

Coles are really nice and thick and capture surprising amounts of thump from toms/kick/snare

Re: Drum OH's, only

I've always gotten great results from an m160 over by the drummer's right shoulder, aimed at the snare. Gets a nice blend of the whole kit, a nice low mid thump from the kick. Takes compression and eq really well. That and a kick mic is a great two mic setup. yea, same. I love an M160 over the shou...

Re: Tell us about your 2023 wrap-up

I'd much rather be at home with my wife and our cat. Same. We have very little desire to go out and see shows any more, I think we maybe saw one show all last year, and we left early. Anyway I haven't added anything up yet, but I'm pretty sure last year was my best ever, if not it was very close, a...
