Chris D. / Gun Club / Flesh Eaters

Hi all, Been listening to the first Flesh Eaters and Gun Club albums a lot recently. Both were produced by Chris D. at Quad Teck studios and have a great vitality to them. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these sessions or how they got the sounds they did. He did the first Dream Syndicat...

Microtonal EQ / Craig Leon

Hi all, Just read this very cool interview with Craig Leon: http://bombmagazine.org/article/1000173/craig-leon In the section about recording Suicide he mentions using "microtonal EQ," which he says is a technique that comes from Can and Neu! records. Does anyone know what he's talking about? Sounds...

No amps! Very cool.
I remember reading somewhere that Shoes recorded the guitars on their first record going direct into the board. I wonder if it's more common than I think...

Thanks all for the solid advice. Intrigued by the ribbon idea but seems like the m88 i'm already using is a prime candidate for trying the Tchad blake method, so I'll be giving that a go.

Which single mic for recording the whole kit?

Hi all, I've lately been enjoying using a single mic for the whole kit. It's nice to cut way back on gear, and the resulting track sits well in the mix right off the bat. I've been using a Beyer M88TG, more or less out of necessity, but also because it works well. But I was wondering if anyone had t...

I have a DR-40 that sounds surprisingly great. I'd assume of the 680 is a bigger version. You might consider how the you'd be hooking up the 680. It's not entirely obvious how you'd use it to record or play back 8 tracks all at once - it looks like it's got 6 input jacks, and 6 output jacks. It als...

The HD24 sounds pretty cool if had for a good price... How is it working with the memory/hard-drive things it uses? Are you guys frequently backing sessions up to your computer or just have multiple hard drives to swap in and out? Is the HD24 pretty quick in mixing situations? Anyone used the tascam...

Advice on portable digital multitracking...

Been an analog guy my whole life and know next to nothing about digital recording... I'm wondering if there's a digital equavalent to a prosumer rack mount cassette 4 or 8 track? What I'm looking for is something with a multiple inputs and outputs so that I could keep using my rack pres and etc. but...

Woolen men

Hi all, Longtime reader if seldom poster on the board, thought I would share some recordings I made with my band. Everything I know about recording I learned from TapeOp! Two songs, one mid-fi recorded to 1/2" tape, the other lo-fi recorded to cassette 4-track. Enjoy and thanks for listening! https:...

What's this little yellow device?

In this footage of Kemialliset Ystavat playing live at WFMU, the guy in the center is using a small, yellow box that looks like it has two rows of mini-keys and two black knobs -- any idea what that is?

Fostex 4-track problem

A buddy of mine has a Fostex X-77 that resets when the rewind button is pushed. It's a later cassette 4-track with an LCD screen that displays the counter, and maybe a few other things, which is the part that resets. The problem is not constant, but seemed to happen maybe 70% of the time. Ultimately...
