Re: Source For Used DAW Computers?

I know around me there are often "recycling" campaigns where they collect old computer and electronics and supposedly dispose of them properly. I think some of that ends up being sold off to local merchants by the pallet and they cobble together systems and put them on eBay for folks like you (maybe...

The EV664 also makes an awesome "crotch mic". I haven't tried mine on kick yet. hmmmm....

Re: sound effect libraries - good forums for second hand?

that Sonnis download (27+GB) was not too bad (I think it took longer to copy it to a USB stick...) and seems to have some pretty cool content. I'm sure i will find at least one sound in there to use at some point. the couple samples I listened to seemed to be pretty good quality.

Re: machine room...

depending on where the equipment is located, maybe even some sound absorption (Auralex or whatever) on any nearby reflective surfaces might keep it from leaking into mics (or your head...).

Re: UAD 3 Plugins Pack - Which would you choose?

btw, if this is your first encounter with UA, sign up and they send you coupons all the time. Then if you buy one, they always seem to send another coupon (usually for $25 off). so don't buy more than one at a time. :D

Re: acoustic meta-material

that's cool - I think it could be particularly useful for ventilation systems. One of my concerns with having an airtight studio (to keep sound in and out) is how do you get fresh air? My studio has a split ductless and just recirculates air, so fresh air comes in when i open the door... i suppose i...

Re: UAD 3 Plugins Pack - Which would you choose?

i started out with things that i though I would use most often, so sort of in order of usage... The LA-2A collection is very nice on vocals, bass, guitars. I use the DBX-160 a lot too on drums/bass. EMT140 (I'll likely never have one of those in my studio). I get some mileage from the Galaxy Tape Ec...

this past weekend. drum tracks for 2 separate clients. then those demo/scratch tracks i mentioned earlier -- we got scratches for 12 songs! which means I will be busy tracking drums for the foreseeable future. Oh, and i was thinking about micing the acoustic but we decided to go direct. guitar playe...

I note that Bob Clearmountain in the latest TapeOp speaks of doing a surround version of most everything he does.
but I think he also said something like "in case anyone ever wants it..." implying nobody wants it. At least not yet. :-)

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I don't mean this to be in any way insulting, but did you make sure the HPF thing is set to "M"? They're pretty low output mics to begin with. yeah, the hi-pass was off and the "tone" switch set to 'M" (music). I don't have another MD441u, but i do have MD421s and friends that told me it should sou...

Re: What musical thang didja work on today/night?

last weekend was some tracking of bass -- a Fender Jazz through the DI on a Yamaha PM1000 into a Klark Teknik KT-2A. Not bad.... then some band rehearsals where we also worked out some new arrangements and refined a few others in preparation for this weekend. Originally thought we might track basics...
