Re: unhyped kick drum mic

I think about 4-5 of my mics make mechanical bump/scratch noises when subjected to kick drum that they don't make in other positions. They sound like a mic does when it's bumped just from the low frequency SPL of the drum. it's true. a bass drum needs a mic that can handle very high SPL, especially...

Re: I love the new Tape Op Design

I like the new cover (#135) even better. Seems like it has a light coating and may hold up even better. Thanks!

i added the Crimson audio mods to 2 of my 57s to make them a little more useable after swearing off 57s for the better part of 10 years...
after the mods, what do you use them for? did you think the mod was worth it?

Re: Problem balancing level of multiple monitors

Set the BM6a trim to "0" and then trim the D5 down to match? yep, that's where I have it. But at "0", I have other monitors up to their max. The +4 setting is louder than the "0" setting. If I set the BM6a to -10dBV, then the volume is significantly lower, which is weird because I think its working...

Problem balancing level of multiple monitors

I have 2 sets of powered monitors and a passive selector switch (that I have verified is not part of the problem). My main set of monitors is Dynaudio BM6a mkii. These have a trim switch on the back for +4 , 0, and -10. My other set is the Equator D5. They have a variable pot where max volume is the...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Tony is showing great restraint by not commenting on the 57.

which as stated, can be perfectly fine for the right situation, but I would not call it "unhyped". It's more anti-hyped.

Re: Looking for physical TapeOp magazines

you might check the USPS to see if the media mail rate applies, otherwise it could be pricey. USPS has all the international/customs forms to fill out, but its not too difficult.

Re: vinyl collecting ( and surrounding planetary atmosphere )

i didn't buy the vinyl version (nothing in my house to playback on) but I can imagine it probably sounds sweet. so somebody buy it and report back, ok? it is my favorite album right now.

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?

I usually keep them at lest through the end of the warranty period (assuming it was new). After that it just depends on my mood. :D

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

here's a shot of a recent session. I think this was an Audix D6 (but I've been using a Telefunken M82 lately) peeking into the port, sE X1 D outside the front head about 4" away and toward the top, point down slightly to avoid some cymbal bleed. DIY subkick about 3-4" from front head, but I don't ac...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

-Waves CLA signature series. have had the drums and bass for some time and only started using recently in little bits here and there. liking the rest of this series, even though Waves are horrible I use the CLA comps fairly often - especially if I need to conserve UAD DSP (I have the UAD LA2A/LA3A/...

Re: "Getting it right on the way in": Channel strips, risk

I have a Universal Audio LA-610 - probably closest to "channel strip" that I own - and I use it quite a bit. Great for some vocals and some bass tracks. The EQ is limited, but the pre and comp are nice. I've also got a Yamaha PM1000 that has pre and EQ, but no comp... so not a full channel strip I s...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

I picked up a Telefunken M82 recently. it's got switches for the "smile" (Kick EQ and high boost) vs natural sound. I use the Kick EQ setting and I'm liking it more than my D6. the low-end thump is unreal. I think there are sound samples on the Telefunken site. downside is that it's one of the more ...
