Re: Limiter on rough mixes

for most projects I do, I'm typically mixing and mastering as I go along - so if the limiter becomes part of the sound, so be it. so yeah, even for rough mixes I start shaping the sound to try to get it close to what the end product will sound like.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

More gobos (built rather than acquired). I feel like I can never have enough......except when trying to store them when they're not in use. I hear that. last year I tore my gobos apart and rebuilt them. they used to be ~4 ft wide and 6 ft high. very difficult to store. I cut them in half and put hi...

Re: Bass Plugins

yeah, but $1500!

I still go with a Radial JDI for most DI work. only $199.

of course I do put that into a 1073 clone pre.
Recently I've been using the DI on an LA-610 and wondering why I haven't used it more.

Re: 500 series mixer aux send?

might need some context to understand what you are trying to accomplish. there are some modules that have parallel inputs (usually 1/4") or outputs (like the EXTC and XAMP 500 modules). and many of the 500 racks can chain modules i.e. preamp->EQ->compressor etc. so what are you trying to do?

Re: Bass Plugins

and unless your DI is really bad (in which case, try a better one?), the lack of low end may not be because of it. Monitors, room treatment, bass/pickup? all that applies. if you've got that covered, then sometimes just adding some distortion/harmonics will make the bass "pop" a bit more. I picked u...

Re: power conditioners, i know i know i know

about the only thing that is close to them is my Apollo 16 interface, and some patchbays and so far no issues with that. My 500 gear is in another rack

Re: power conditioners, i know i know i know

I use one of these -- purely for convenience - there is no power conditioning at all. I've had it for several years and have had no issues with the switches wearing out or anything. I like it to power on monitors, preamps, I even have my entire 500-series racks controlled by switches so i can turn o...

Re: Hardware Compressors for vocals on a budget

I've got a Behringer XR16 and love it. The number of effects (gates, eq, compressors, reverbs, delays, busses, and more) would take racks and racks of analog equipment. The XR16 and a tablet (with my phone as backup) are amazingly compact. With Behringer, just remember not to push it (like analog) a...

Re: Twin Cities meeting of Audio nuts???

I just have to say I admire your ability to keep this going for so many years (yeah I looked back at the posts). We tried it awhile back in Austin and it just fizzled (like so many band and/or music opportunities). anyway, kudos for such a long-lived meetup. I hope the folks there appreciate what yo...

Re: Onboard Guitar Pre-Amps/Boosters

found this. no idea if/how it works... not exactly a boost, but if impedance is a factor it may help. but not sure if you can tie to just one pickup either. https://www.creationaudiolabs.com/redeemer another option might be to try and attenuate (pad) the output of the other pickup so it is a better ...

or how about a powered speaker? these things work great and super simple setup - just plug into the mic input and turn up the volume... https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/B112D--behringer-eurolive-b112d-1000w-12-inch-powered-speaker https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/B110D--behringer-eurol...

Re: Vocal Mic Bleed

if the felt pick does not work, you could check to make sure the bleed is coming directly into the mic vs reflecting off something. If in a small room, then try placing something deadening around you - like a closet full of clothes, or a mattress up on end, etc. Or you could experiment with somethin...
