Re: Taking a specific vocal sound to live settings

that sounds reasonable to me. If you can simplify the setup (for yourself and sound person) so that it's a DI/line out, I don't see that as any different than any other instrument on the stage.

Re: Oddball Compressor ... Executone M270

transilytic is actually what I meant--much more prone to failure (in my experience) than standard electrolytics. gotcha. Transi-Lytic was Sprague's trademarked name (but still an electrolytic cap - so could technically be replaced with a modern electrolytic and function correctly. the sound is anot...

Re: Oddball Compressor ... Executone M270

The bigger caps look like transilytics Electrolytic.. but yes, they don't usually last more than 10-20 years - or at least are prone to fail after that long. They may "open" - then they are not doing their job - or they may short -- make sure you have a fuse on the power supply - or something in be...

not sure if it also converts SD files, but I still have a working PT8 system (in addition to my PT 2019 system...) if it ever comes up again... 8)

Re: Your favorite general use eq plugin

I use the Waves Renaissance EQ for a lot of general stuff like hi-pass. next probably the Waves SSL EQ or E/G channel strips. Or I might use a Waves API, Waves Scheps 73, UAD Pultec or UAD Neve 31102 for something with more character. I have several other EQs that came with various plugin bundles an...

Re: reference listening

I would use my phone like a USB connected thumb drive before I'd play through the Aux connector (then you are adding that D2A converter, and the A2D of whatever you plugged into - into the sound). I'm pretty sure the Aux/headphone jack on my phone probably sucks.

Re: Waddaya's workin' on this Forf weekend?

tracked some drums Saturday for a new song one of my band's is working on. then got some new ideas (as I was sleeping it seems...) and re-tracked it again today (to a scratch track). I think it's gonna work. and at some point over the holiday weekend, overdubbed tambourine on another track, modded s...

Re: Basic home setup advice

I'll just add that I have a UA Apollo 16 interface and by no means does that mean that I use UAD plugins exclusively. Yeah, I use a few when it's the right tool but I use a lot of native plugins in combination... so much that I've never run out of DSP. It's a great sounding interface, but it does no...

Re: Pro Tools Updated Renewal Pricing

I'm running on Windows so might be different - although to be honest i too get strange instabilities all the time and have learned to work around most of them if i can. that's really what software teaches us today. how to workaround shit. most of the time I'm not really sure if it is Pro Tools, my U...

Re: gadgetlabs wavepro drivers for Windows 10???

if you haven't tried already, you might try uninstalling and reinstalling again. when you do the uninstall, choose the option to delete the drivers. then repeat the install process jumping through all hoops including that setting so windows doesn't "upgrade" your drivers? of course, just know that n...

Re: Pro Tools Updated Renewal Pricing

I bought 2 years to add to my annual subscription - so I put off any decisions until Sept 2021... and then I hope Avid does decide what they are doing and makes it more clear. My guess is that at that point we will all be sticking with with the latest version we have (no upgrades), or turning in our...

Re: Speaker switcher recommendations

I looked at how nice the $1000+ Coleman' are, slapped myself, then built one. I wanted it totally passive and I did not need a volume control (my UAD Apollo 16 has that), so I got a heavy duty 4PDT toggle switch like this (not this exact one, I think I got mine from Mouser...): https://smile.amazon....

Re: the return of the ubertar ribbon mic

cool. the door is very "pignose'.... i can see where having both options would be useful. With the back closed it's much more immediate, and maybe a bit lo-fi too. with the back open its much more natural sounding I guess? so many options for donor chassis's too.... :D

Re: Mixing with the band there

sometimes if trying to do a quick rough mix then sometimes there is no choice but otherwise I agree with you - I prefer to have some time for ME to focus and then have the band listen once I've got it dialed in a bit (and any editing done if needed). I also found that providing a very rough mix that...
