Re: HELP locating Tascam System 20 manuals
Good morning, I am setting a somewhat portable 8 track analog recording rig and plan to use an old Tascam MM-20 mixer, expander and EQ to get my signals to tape. I am desperately searching for a copy of the manuals, Does anyone have a copy laying around? Many thanks! Sean Have you looked on ebay or...

If I had the space I'd be all over the 388. That thing is badass.
I now own a 244, and used to own a TSR-8.
There's a guy in PA making 1/4 - 2" tape http://atrtape.com/
I got that lead from Steve at NAC.

I bought a Tascam 244 today from a guy on CL today. I don't know if I got a good deal or not. I paid $100 for it delivered to my door. I live near the TEAC factory, so I am going to bring it in next week to have it looked over. I'm hoping they can restore it to factory new specs, and I can have some...

NAC is actually working with a manufacturer to make brand new tape (instead of new old stock). Apparently tape is back with a vengeance right now and business is booming there. I spoke with Steve yesterday, and he told me this directly. I guess what they're using now is NOS from a company that went ...

OPs feeling that digital is cold/tinny and full of artifacts. Why, though? Isn't digital well known for that, and why we have many plugins trying to simulate analog? Why we have some guys running their mixes through tape, etc. What's wrong with acknowledging limitation? Tape obviously has limitatio...

Digital *is* very convenient. Not that I'm trying to talk you out of or into anything, but if your space is a small 1 bedroom apt am I correct in assuming that there is no drum kit? Meaning that you're recordings for the time being are notes and compositional demos rather than something meant for r...

I guess I just associate cassettes with "imposes undesirable audible artificats I must overcome inherent to the medium" as opposed to digital, which gives me back exactly what I put in, or gives me back exactly what I tweak and fuck up with plugins. When I think of good sound, I don't want limited ...

I can't imagine preferring the sound of cassette recordings to even the most basic digital recording. Like seriously, I'd rather record 8 bits at 22KHz than deal with cassettes. Why do you say that? There is a definite sound difference (cliches like "warm", etc). Some people prefer that sound. Why ...

I mostly record to Pro Tools. But I use cassette too sometimes, it's fun. the sound has a certain character that's interesting sometimes. I would never say it's better than digital recording, but it's different. I like the workflow, removing the unlimited re-do's and unlimited deferral of decisions...

Re: Is recording on 4-track cassette still viable?
Can't stand the artifacts (I don't hear many artifacts, but maybe my ears are bad), so you're going to record on cassette! I love it :D I know, right? It makes no sense. I tried for the past 5 years to like digital and get the sound I want, but I'm ready to give up now. And just go back to crappy t...

Is recording on 4-track cassette still viable?
I'm looking to get back into 4 track recording. I realize all the advantages of digital, but I just can't accept the tin/cold sound of it, nor the artifacts. But that's a different discussion. What I am wondering if it's even possible to record on 4-track anymore. I am having a hard time finding Typ...

its not like there's a factor of converter quality, being a straight digital to digital thing). Ah. I was thinking of having a studio do it because I'd have to learn about conversion. e.g. I just transferred VHS tapes to my computer and it was a steep learning curve. That was analog to digital, tho...

Thanks, guys. Nick, I respect your points, but our band broke up long ago and always felt this record was done haphazardly. No chance to reunite and do it again since everyone is old/married. This is more of a project where I fix something that always bothered me. We don't have any fans so no big de...

ADAT to DAW?
Hey guys. I recorded a record years ago on ADAT and there were always things about it that bothered me. I was wondering if it would be possible to get those tracks into my PC and rework them? I assume I'd need an ADAT player, original tapes, computer...what else? And is this possible? I really want ...
