I worked at dbx ca. 1979 and was able to build a 3bx out of spare parts. It was one of the most pricey items they had there and definitely a huge waste of an opportunity. I had no clue about compressors at the time. What can you do with it? Well, mostly expand things with limited dynamic range, the ...

I love my RE20 for bass cabinet. However, this weekend I'm going to experiment with a Beesneez Oliver. Back when I worked in a studio with a nice locker of Neumanns I loved a U47 on all things bass but didn't get a chance to try it on a bass cabinet.

Seventh Circle Pres FS

This is a chassis loaded with 6 C84s and 2 J99s (with John Hardy op amps). I love these pres, but as a touring musician and someone headed back to school (in a non music related field) these just sit around. I built 4 of the C84s and folks from Gearslutz from whom I bought the other pres did the oth...

Why not get both and get a Metric Halo 2882 +DSP? You can probably do this for your budget.

I am looking at back at everyone's suggestions to combine the price of the Mackie and NS10's and buying 1 set of better speakers. Has anyone tried the JBL LSR 4328P Studio Monitors? Would anyone recommend some active speakers? For all types of music. Thanks! I haven't tried those particular one, bu...

Passive speakers have a much longer break in period than actives though.
Why is this? Active and passive speakers both have exactly the same driver components. Are there parts of a passive crossover that have to break in that an active doesn't? I've never heard this before.

Thanks!

I wonder if there is a way to remove or rebuild the encoders. This has been a known problem for quite some time. I would imagine that it might be possible to lose the encoders and just control the unit from an MRC (which is way, way better.). Just a thought. Edwin PS Let us know if the battery repla...

I really like my McIntosh MC2105. I got it pretty cheap back in the day and I've tried replacing it with more modern amps and they never sound as good to me.

What kind of converter is it? I know there were some, like the Metric Halo, where there was actually a delay between the two sides. No shit! This is ancient history in Metric Halo land. There was an offset of one sample in each pair of converters, but that has been long fixed by a firmware update a...

Thanks for clarifying the power-cutting issue, dudes! I'm using a live sound console which doesn't have a separate output/level control for monitors, so it's pretty annoying having to crawl behind the desk to turn off the monitors if I just wanna check my mix with headphones every now and then. Oth...

Are we talking the Peavey Valverb here? I have one of these and I like the tone, but it seems pretty noisy.

This is all great advice! I would also transcribe and learn lines from players you like.

Also, try the Bach Cello Suites, there's a lifetime of music there!

I record with a Groove Tubes Ditto box. It can sound very nice as is, but then during mixing, I'll run it out to an Alembic preamp and McIntosh MC30 into an Acme Low B2. Sounds amazing. It doesn't add grit, as I don't turn it up that loud, just lots of space and depth.

Tubes!
