The erase head erases the old signal before you record the new signal with the record head. So if it's blank tape and you're not going to overdub (or even rewind and re-record a new take), you don't need it. But otherwise, the record head will just add more sound onto a track on top of what's alread...

In Digital Performer, it's a plug-in called "Trim", which is nothing more than level and balance (if it's a stereo track). When I started using DP, I thought "What a stupid plug-in! I want reverbs! Delays! Flangers!". But wow, does that plug-in come in handy, especially when mono-ing a stereo track.

My buddy keeps telling me to hit "save" every time he does something. I wish I could remember to do that when he's not around..... I am amazed at myself, though, when a crash loses the last twenty minutes of stuff I was tweaking - I'm getting pretty good at re-opening the project and re-doing each t...

That site looks legit to me. I think they realized there's a bit of money to be made procuring licenses and decided to do it cheaply to see if they can make it up in volume. The Harry Fox site, being what seemed like the only game in town, kept it's pricing in the pre-digital era. I can see a $16 pr...

Anyone who doesn't back up their stuff to at least two different hard drives is a fool. A fool like myself, until it happened to me once - I lost everything. It'll never happen again, though! Your hard drive will fail eventually. Could be today, could be next year. But it will fail, and you'll eithe...

Thank you guys for all your input. The work that I am starting to do is more foley, dialog, sound effects, editing, etc. rather than music. I do know most commercial releases are done on PT, but going the PT route feels like I'll be selling my soul to Satan. I betcha you'll do fine with any DAW. A ...

If you're using a DAW, use Ozone as an insert effect on the master buss. Then when you change the mix, your new mixdown will have the same Ozone settings on it as the old one. Don't do a stereo mixdown and then apply Ozone outside the DAW - that's too many steps. If you do work this way (as I do), s...

Digital Performer is used a lot by audio/video people. I've been using it for years. If your DAW can open a movie and stay in sync with it, and if your DAW offers different frame rates, then you're good to go. There may be other perks in a particular DAW that you may or may not find helpful, but tha...

I broke down and got a demo pair of the Oppo Planar PM-2 headphones when Music Direct had a 20% off sale, so the price was sweet. Here's an Oppo link to the phones: http://oppodigital.com/headphones-pm-2/ I had used Oppo disc players for years and had a lot of respect for the company. I've had to mi...

I have to admit a Revox A77 is a beautiful thing to behold.

I used to work at Northeastern University in the media lab. We had about 24 of them. I wish I had a picture of the wall where they were installed in racks - I think it was four high and six wide - it was enough to make one drool....

sorry to hijack the thread but do you guys ever use your 2 tracks as tape echoes? I have a otari 5050 that i'd like to try this on... We used to do that back in the eighties when playing in bars because we didn't have any other delay. It worked great - until the reel ran out, usually in the middle ...

I need to transfer 1/2" 8-track tape to DAW; anyone kno

...someone who does this? I'm having a hard time with Google - type in "8-track" anything and suddenly you're back in the early seventies. I looked through the TapeOp ads but couldn't find anything. I want to transfer an album's multitracks to 24-bit WAVs so I can remix it. I'm in Boston, so if I co...
