I think what you're taliking about is more of a do-do list, than chord charts. I use these on every record. Since you don't often have the luxury of starting a song, and working until it's done when your making an entire record (I don't anyway) it can get pretty easy to forget little ideas, and to l...

for me - I mix everything exactly like I would like to hear it on the record. high end , low end, compression, and 2 bus EQ if needed. Whatever it takes to sound finished to me. I do leave headroom for the ME to work with, and if there is any question on over all brightness, I'll back off the top. I...

Hey Matyas - What's in the band ? horns , drums, and bass, - piano, guitar, vocals ? If it's horns, drums, and bass - stereo pair out front, kind of high (this depends on the sound of your room) in an X/Y, or close pair. Wide room mics work well for a full micing set up, but are a little hollow to g...

overdriving any piece of gear to distortion is too hot... unless you want distortion.
any red lights on your recording medium input is too hot...unless you want distortion.

if you hear distortion (that you don't want) you're too hot.

hope this helps dd

Hey Brad - North Texas...rocks. kudos. I should clarify on the overdub thing. This is dictated more by economics than anything else. Recording a big band -19 pieces for me most of the time-in a major studio here in Los Angeles gets very expensive. So doing the solos after the tracking makes sense. a...

Who knew people were so passionate about big bands ? cool. first off - Professor - I like your style. Real world recording takes a little creativity, and the phrase "by any means " is a big one in my world. I've produced the last 6 Brian Setzer Orchestra records, and while they're more of a rock/swi...

WOW Duple Meter - that's harsh. "or you can mic it up like a modern recording session, and kill all the interest and life of the performance...that's up to you." For my recordings ,it is up to me, and I choose not to be limited by narrowly defined ideas about what's right or wrong. It's art man. The...

It's pretty common for big bands to set up with winds on the left, bones in the middle, and trumpets on right, with bass and drums behind. this works well to show the play between saxes, and trumpets in alot of swing charts. I've tried the full circle a couple of times, and wasn't crazy about it. No...

I just do straight trades with my friends - I'll mix your tune, you owe me a couple of drum tracks etc.
Works pretty well for me as my friends are talented..if they weren't...not so much.

I've recorded a lot of big band stuff, and there are many different "right" ways. One pretty simple way is: Horns in a shallow semi circle -drums and bass in the back (piano as well if you have one) one drum o/h - not too high, one bass mic, one mic per section (trumps/bones/winds) and one stereo pa...

You need to get your head out of your ass. if you're supporting yourself in the music biz you're ahead of the game. If you're not doing exactly what you want - it's called PAYING YOUR DUES. I'm not saying you shouldn't try to move your career in a particular direction, - that's a great idea. You jus...

The Castle studio is in Franklin - I did a record there in Feb. of last year. It's about 25 minutes outside of Nashville, and alot of the recording musos live in the area.
I think there might be a few studios in the area.
It's a great area - very rural. good luck.
