Mike, First, great website! You have some really nice DIY projects on there. Thank you for taking the time to post those. I was reading your post and I had two thoughts. I'm not going to call them "definitive" suggestions, but rather just some ideas you may want to try. They are more instinct than a...

I saw this the other day and laughed. Just a wee bit of qualifications needed for the gig.

It's scary to think but I think in NYC you just might find somebody to fill the position.

I actually just missed getting a "free" piano today. I had a tuner scheduled to look at it with me and the guy selling it called me a half hour before my appoinment and told me he gave it to somebody else. URGH!! Here's what I learned in my little adventure. Try it out before buying. Bring a ...

If you buy one right now, two things could, and probably will happen, in the not so distant future: 1) Apple will upgrade their operating system and you will be stuck having to purchase the new one for $129 or staying with a newly outdated computer. Of course, it will take time for all of your progr...

I did the recordings for a major NYC music conservatory for three years. For the orchestra, we mainly used three Schoeps in a Decca tree arrangement hanging from the ceiling a little bit above and behind the conductor's head. It's already been mentioned, but what made the biggest difference in the r...

For easier transfers to your computer, splurge on a Microtrack from M-audio. It can come in pretty handy for location sound duties.

In college, I recorded a jazz trio album. Since then, I've worked mainly with jazz in both recorded and live situations. Here's a couple of points I've learned from those dates: 1) Going along with Chris, learn where the null points are and set up the musicians accordingly. Moving an instrument a fe...

There's a keyboard shortcut, "Control + Up Arrow/Down Arrow" that changes track height individually. What you mentioned with tracks changing height as they move is exactly what happens.

Agreed, though it's a live concert recording and it sounds like only the direct was used. Concert recordings can be tricky to judge sound-wise because you never know what was going on backstage between what the engineer wanted to do and what the producers allowed him/her to do.
