I did want to add one more thing. Sight lines are very important to an orchestra. If they can't see each other and/or the conductor, they might have some big performance issues. Just one more thing to think about...

I would second Joel's opinion. Solo mics for the quartet since you said each one solos at some point. Nice stereo pair and some outboards for the orchestra. I would also second getting some better pre's if possible. The tricky part is where to set them up in the room. If you have gobos or maybe even...

The soundtrack to the Pixar movie, "The Incredibles." Great, real orchestra tracks. Nice special feature on the recording of it on the DVD. I also liked the incidental music on "Monster's Inc." I might get flamed for this because they stole everything from everywhere but the soundtrack from "Moulin ...

www.brickwall.com - safe, but not that cheap.

www.surgex.com - same idea, still not that cheap.

Two thoughts:

1) Mix Master Directory - Easier to use if you have a friend who can recommend a certain studio.

2) Pick a favorite album. Look at who mixed it. Call him/her up.

Also, knowing your budget is important.

Going back to the first post: John Coltrane. Even when I was studying music, I still just didn't quite get the hype over some of his albums. Additionally, I always felt that some of the popular Miles albums were way overhyped and I just wasn't that into them. I absolutely refused to by "Kind of Blue...

If you can get a record cleaner, use it before the transfer. Even the simple brush ones help. It will help take away noise before you even need plug-ins.

Why three at a time? Saving time?

If you like rumors, the word is that Apple is going to be replacing the G4 Mac Mini soon with a new version that runs on an Intel chip. They might even announce it as early as next week. Again, just rumors, but certainly where the lineup is heading. Might be worth the wait...

You could also raise the speaker stand up on points (little spikes that reduce the contact points with the floor) ... Putting the speaker (or speaker stand) on spikes actually works to couple the speaker with the floor and helps the vibration transfer to another room. If you're looking at cheap hi-...

Look at a product from Auralex called the "GRAMMA" or the "Subdude". I live in an apartment and use one underneath my subwoofer. For $50, it reduces the vibration from the subwoofer nicely. It, of course, doesn't reduce the output level of the sub but rather just decouples it from the floor.

If you're using gobos and are in the living room, put them around the sax and the bass, not the drums. The drums are going to leak into everything anyways and putting gobos around them isn't going to change that much. The gobos around the sax and the bass are more for helping the microphones reject ...

isn't that why consoles are tilted so begin with, so they only reflect to the listener at one incident? FWIW, I believe consoles were tilted originally for purely ergonomic reasons. The tilt just makes it easier to read all the knobs. I highly doubt there was much acousitical consideration given to...

I own and use one. So far, it works great for impromptu location recordings which sound like what you want to do. I've only really used the 1/8" stereo microphone input with a "Sonopak" beltpack microphone system. The combination produces some amazing sounding room recordings. I haven't used the 1/4...
