Its a hard effect to replicate without a stereo speaker setup. At some point, Fender started making the Trem on the suitcase pianos stereo. A suitcase amp has 4 speakers, 2 inboard facing the player, and 2 outboard, facing the listener. The intensity knob on the panel intensifies the effect of the s...

I've been reading about recording for 25+ years. I find inspiration and fresh ideas or methods I've forgotten about all the time. My only suggestion is that if you find yourself in a rut, it's good to read to find inspiration. If you're busy and killing it... well then, keep up the good work and wri...

Good point! The Drawmer DS201 is a similar gate if you want to expand your search.

If you're trying to save money, there's gotta be a reasonable way to DIY several passive ones.

Otherwise I would have recommended the API L200 rack loaded with L215 modules

Give Fabfilter Saturn a try. I was just reading about it on another engineer's recommendation.

Another +1 for Beta 56. The 90? shape of the mic/XLR helps get it closer to the drummer's face without getting in the way. Other tricks I've done to deal with drummer bgvs. 1) You can often get away with more serious lopping off of top/bottom end on a BGV than you could with a lead vocal. Don't be a...

On this tune the full mix flange sounds like somebody did it with a 2 track reel to reel deck. I've used this trick with reel to reel decks and even a cassette deck that had varispeed control. It's much quicker to pull off with an MXR flanger or Waves Metaflanger plugin. In my experience reel to ree...

The TG version of the M88 was redesigned to handle being put in bass drums. You should be able to use that without fear. I know I do.

Re: Hardware mixer with midi control?

Hey all, looking for suggestions on a good hardware mixer with 8-12 inputs to store mixes that can be recalled using midi program changes. Midi control over faders and sends would be cool too. Does this exist? How much money are you looking to spend? I would look into a used Yamaha digital console....

Again on the packing blanket thing - if you're working on the cheap and don't have packing blankets couch cushions do a remarkably good job. You can also avoid using mic stands as props because the cushions are usually stiff enough to stand and stack. Build a little house around the front of the ki...

Also consider draping a packing blanket over the bass drum and the microphone & stand during tracking to physically keep the sound of the rest of the kit out of the mic.

Re: fader port

I have a fader port.....it stopped working.... I guess those are all good points. So at some point I have to get a current mac and buy pro tools all over again which sucks. I'm running a custom built PC chassis with a Hackintosh kernel so I can still use my original PCI cards with PT 10. Works. The...

Don't know what you use, but I set Pro Tools to autosave every 5 minutes...highly recommended. I don't go into that session backup folder often, but I'm always happy it's there when I need it. The best part is when you have to refer to an earlier version and you can't tell what you've been doing fo...
