The impressions I always got of Calexico's guitar sound were: a) he's playing loud, probably used to playing unamplified b) he's often playin a nylon c) the strings are probably heavy d) there's a decent amount of room in the mic, but it sounds like the mic is close to where the strings are being st...

I think this is a case of hearing something through someone elses ears. When you have an expert there listening you will listen very critically yourself. The only thing worse is playing an instrument in front of somebody who is a complete master of that instrument. Fact is, if you can hear exactly w...

The Topaz is near the bottom of the soundtracs range AFAIK so you could look at the Quartz, Jade, MRX, CP-series etc... Studio systems might be able to help you (no affiliation, I've just found them helpful in the past) http://www.studiosystems.co.uk/used_consoles.php Soundcraft have loads of good c...

I read that Satie was supposedly opposed to Impressionism.

More recently the french band Air come to mind, not saying that I particularly like them. Mind you, I don't particularly like impressionist painting either.

Any synthesizer music that fits synthesis to conventional structures with new results could fit. Walter Carlos is one example, obviously synthesizer music, classical source material but sounds like something else entirely. Going back further, Satie comes to mind. Conversely, Alarm Will Sound perform...

I'd go for an Amek BC series or a studer 169. Might be a couple of channels short of 16, but you could add a nice external pre into the stereo line channels for variation. Nice tidy, clean reliable setup with the great monitoring sections, pres, eqs, built in stereo buss comp/lim and metering. Beaut...

Having been away from the guitar for a few years I've recently been looking at getting an acoustic. From trying many new cheaper martin's, taylors, a gibson J45 and some blueridges and some others I came to the following general conclusions: The taylors sound far too genteel for my liking, a bright ...

Hmm, low level listening sounds like a good idea too. Balancing levels at low levels might give you a much more radio friendly mix than compressing it to death.

I would have thought that if you wanted to capture the live sound accurately you should favour SDCs over LDCs. Given that you have the cardiod oktavias you might be better off considering the Avenson or Earthworks for spaced omni's or as you say, get the omni capsules for the oktavias. For overall f...

Allright, Sense of smell, if you don't mind :)

Then again, my dogs don't smell too bad if they aren't washed for a few days or even weeks. I can't say the same about most humans.

There are too many variables to just say put the spl at so and so dB and you're good to mix in the most flat way. They are: 1. Your room. The higher you turn it up the more the room becomes excited with the sounds from your speakers. Often times this will over accentuate the lows and a mix done whi...

In fairness to Bob Katz, the book is about Mastering and creating a consistent listening environment is important. Listening volume isn't just another little detail in that context. After all, given a good listening environment the mastering engineer might decide to do almost nothing to a track if i...

Hmmm...I need a pair that would work on Violin too so maybe the Josephsons would sound a bit too scratchy.

I'm interested in this too. Another interesting pair would be the Avensons. I'm trying to decide between those 3. My guess is that the Avenson's would be the most natural sounding but very dependent on your room. I wonder are the Josephson's brighter sounding than the Octavia's? I hate edgy sounding...

I have an Amek BCII and I love it. High quality in every way, and I really like the stereo compressor built into mine. I don't plan to hang on to it for the long term. Before that I had a soundcraft delta 200 and that was actually really nice considering how cheap it was. Soundworkshop stuff looks n...
