Jim Williams doesn't work on mics anymore.

My first big mic purchase was a Lawson L47MP, which has served me well. It probably doesn't sound like a U47, but it sounds great and is quite versatile.

I also have a pair of UMT70S mic, which are the most versatile pair of LD condensers I have ever used. Try to keep them both if you can!

Perhaps you might have some luck putting a Jangle Box after your fuzz.

The non vintage stuff can be really expensive as well. My favorite pair of SDC are my Schoeps M222, with the 701 tubes. I bought them some years ago, and if I had not, I couldn't afford them now. But they are transformer less, and might not have the "tube" sound you are looking for. I too have heard...

I second this with enthusiasm! I love my U3, which I got in near mint condition for $3K, which included moving and the first tuning.
