When a mic become an extension of an instrument or amplifier for a musician, choosing the wrong mic becomes analogous to moving a Marshall amp in the room for the jazz guitarist and expecting him/her to play comfortably. i think this is a great way of looking at it. But then again, The way I miced ...

can't speak for bannerj, but sometimes i like an SDC placed inside the guitar, with an omni pointed at the ever popular 12th fret from a few feet back - only problem is, you have to avoid moving around too much and rattling it. i got the idea after i saw a local guy using an acoustic with a 57 insid...

my bad, may bad...i think i'm talking about the B-1, not the C-1 - that's the one that just came out, $40 or something, right? for the price, i guess you could torture it any old way you wanted

i was just talking to a buddy of mine this weekend, he bought one last fall and was raving about how great it sounded as a mono drum mic (i was dubious, but the stuff on his four track didn't sound THAT bad)...anyway, 6 months later and the thing is crapped out, and the fool wants to buy another one...

this is a total tangent, but is it possible to double cut a side? as in, two grooves containing different music, so that you can never be quite sure which tunage you're gonna get when you drop the needle?

this is how i do it (i'm sure other folks know better ways) there's a bolt on each side of the harp: once you remove these, the harp comes apart more or less like a sanwich: top plate, reed, airhole thingy (either wood or plastic), reed, bottom plate. make sure you note which way the reeds are sitti...

Harry wrote I know C is common in folk and B is common in blues but is there a standard? It's obviously depends on what key the song is rooted in,but everytime I ask a harp player I get a different answer. Some say it should be in the 1st, some say 4th,some say 5th some say 3rd One guy even told me....

I guess this almost diverges from the concept of multing vocals, and heads more in the direction of harmonies, but sometimes i find that some variation between takes can really make it interesting. like, if you've got something acoustic driven, but with a bigger arrangement, track a take of playing ...

wwsm wrote To bad! Maybe if more engineers went to shows, and felt real dynamic range, we could make a dent in "the volume wars". wow, yeah - think about it, we hear over and over that when getting sounds during tracking, the tried and true method is to "listen to what's happening in the room"...but...

i've gotten good results with a 57 under the snare, mixed in with a mono OH...sometimes that kick bleed can be a real bitch, of course, but hey, one time that 57 placement ended up being my entire drum sound
