Thanks for all the advice. I've been cleaning it regularly, but I'm the 3rd owner and it obviously needs some maintenance. I'll try re-seating the card for channel 4 and see if that helps the VU, and I think I'll start collecting the necessary tools to do at least the calibration myself -- probably ...

Tascam 38 issues
Issue 1: Tracks 3 and 4 on my tascam 38. From what I can tell, I can record to them fine (signal registers on the vu meter) but on play back they fade in and out randomly. I thought it may be the heads originally, which were in bad shape, so I found a scrap 38 for cheap and took the much better-look...
