The Audio Technica 3000 series mics are on sale right now EVERYWHERE because they've discontinued the product line. Good value mics- CHEAP now until they are gone. With this in mind, the 3031's (cardioid) and 3032's (omni) are really sweet mics. I have the 31's, use them on acoustic stringed instru...

So, when you have all the controls set flat, it's still doing something? Sounds unlikely, but yes, it is affecting the mix. It's necessary to activate the 3 bands, but not necessary to cut or boost any frequencies (although I often do while mastering a mix). I got the name of the plugin slightly sc...

I bought one of the earliest phase linear EQ plugins, the PAR PLEQ3. It's definitely best used for mastering, being a major CPU vampire. Still, when a mix has undesireable phase buildup that creates that gauzey veil, merely putting the mix through this EQ without even cutting or boosting any frequen...

I second the advice to play whatever you intend to buy. I don't own an upright, but recently did a folk project, and the bassist used a student bass his mother bought him when he was 13 years old. It was the best sounding upright I've recorded to date, so there are inexpensive gems out there. Happy ...

I've heard the Avantone for example, both stock tube and NOS tube, and I hear a really thin mic. Just curious, what source material were you listening to/tracking? It's definitely a bright mic, but I've gotten plenty of low end on acoustic guitar with it, for instance. The NOS tube I put in mine wa...

I am frightened by the e602. That's a lotta low end. Don't be. I've been using the e602 since it first came out, it has never caused me any grief in getting a really great kick sound in a mix. I record alternative rock/pop, blues, roots, jazz, always get what I want from it...and it is a bass drum,...

They're selling AT3035's for $99. I just bought my 3rd one. The 3031's are real nice too, great for acoustic stringed instruments, got a pair slightly used on the Grammy's last year, highly recommend both!

Avant CV 12, right at $500, 9 patterns. I bought one a few months back, put a GE 5 Star 6072A tube in it, fabulous.

I'm happy with my 32-8. I know there are better boards out there, but I got mine new at a bankruptcy sale of a retail store for a great price. I track using the direct outs and never print EQ other than an occasional high pass filter, and I mix in the box, although I've done some decent board mixes ...

Another thing to consider here is the player's pedal technique. I have a 1903 Knabe in my room, and the only time I've ever had objectionable sustain pedal noise is with one singer/songwriter who plays remarkably well overall, but is self taught, and she really works the sus pedal like it's a bellow...

Glad to see the 602 catching on. I've had one since they first came out and like Joel, stopped looking for anything else. It never disappoints, regardless of music style.

I'm on the outskirts of Nashville, just 30 minutes from downtown, but surrounded by woods and farms. People love coming here to record, I think the net effect is that it makes them more relaxed and puts them in the mood to generate better performances. It's quieter, less expensive, but close enough ...

It might be to calibrate the condenser element itself with respect to input sensitivity. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it.
