Best drum sound I ever got was with one ribbon mic out 2-3 ft from the kit about chest high. Glyn Johns style has never failed me either. I've gotten some great sounds with the following setup: k sn OH x2 (glyn johns config) Room or mic out front of kit also, watch lanois' 'here is what is' dvd if y...

hey all, thanks for the responses. I know the feeling of being out of the loop for hourly rehearsal space. I moved about 45 min out of the city a few years back. Prior to that, I had a space in the house I was renting. The few places I knew in the village have long since gone. Ultrasound is a nice p...

Rehearsal Rooms NYC?
Hey All,
can anyone recommend an hourly rehearsal place in NYC? Preferrably downtown near the village.
We've been getting together in midtown, but we're not happy with the place and it's a bit of a pain to get to for the folks I've been playing with the last few weeks...
thanks,

I just read an old article with Dan where he said Actung was recorded with a Soundcraft board w/ some neve outboard pre's. Also read that most of the Edge's guitar on that album was recorded from a practice amp they had in the control room... As for Shine, it's my favorite album of the last few year...

I find it very fatiguing to listen to. It's very brittle and it's too loud (not in the good sense.) To me, it seems like everything was pumped up/compressed/limited/whatever... to the point that it makes it hard to listen to. After about 3 songs and 15min on the way home, I had to turn it off. It's ...

Dan is notorious for getting performances down rather than worry what mic. eq, pre he's using. I think that's what makes his work so amazing. I love the imperfections. For his drum sounds, I read recently that he uses a couple of 47's overhead with a d12 for the kick. Also, if you do a google search...

Perfect example. That's exactly what I'm talking about...That string pad with a crystally ambience swirling behind it. Has an infinite quality to it. I've come close using some swell type delays but still looking for the basics behind that sound. Not really looking to copy it as much as get the same...

Eno/Lanois String Patch?
Anyone know the specifics on that classic strings patch/ambience that has made it's way through many eno and lanois productions? I remember reading sometime ago it was an old dx7 patch of eno's? Is there a soft synth version (fm7/8, etc.) out there that gets close? I've gotten close with a few diffe...

Favorite rooms with a Neve console...
I'm doing research for a side project and wanted to get some of your opinions.
What are the best recording rooms in the country that have a Neve console?
Thanks,
Rich

focusrite Sapphire Pro?
Anyone pick one of these up yet? It seems like a good bang for the buck, but I haven't really read anything on them in detail other than the ads and stuff on their website. How do the preamps match up against some of their other products? Is anyone using the previous version of the Sapphire? -rich
