I totally agree on that, it's just that cassette gets a very bad rep by too many people who haven't used good portastudio's...my tascam 388 sounds a lot better though, not even talking bout 2 inch machines... I think a Tascam 388 can actually sound quite good. That might be a really great alternati...

Sound system/person needed for lg Nepalese convention, L.A.

Hey everyone! I was contacted recently by Los Angeles Friends of Nepal, a non-profit organization, to ask around to see if anyone could help out with an A/V system for a convention at the Westin Hotel near LAX. The room that the convention is in can accommodate 1500 people. They need the A/V sound s...

Re: Let's talk cheapo Mic Pre's

Basically, I just want to know what mic pre's you guys would put at the top of the "pretty good pre" list in say... the $300 range, if any. I'm not sure about whether this is per channel or what, but I'll just let it fly anyway! :D First of all, I'll second the recommendation for a Peavey VMP-2. Fo...

I don't apply delays very scientifically, but often, the repeats are quarter notes or thirds. It really depends on the song, but I tweak until I get it just right, even if it takes a while. And I always try and emulate an analog delay (if using a plug-in) by making sure the highs are rolled off. For...

I go through this all the time. I feel like it's sounding really great during tracking, and then I go to mix, and I don't like the way it sounds. I drive around to it for a while, make some adjustments a little later, and then I (usually) like it much better. But then, I realize that I could have ma...

Omnis are very handy on snare for brush work. That's my only experience. And it was with an Earthworks TC30K, but the Avensons's are kinda similar. Those type of mics are usually great from an SPL handling standpoint, and their collection of room sounds does diminish when up close to a source. One ...

Re: Anyone used Avensons for snares?

what's your room like for acoustic guitars? i ask because i'm really interested in picking up a pair of these for that purpose for the reason you cited, but i'm hesitant because my room isn't anything special. just an apartment living room, so i'm curious how much it really matters in that applicat...

Anyone used Avensons for snares?

Just curious if anyone's recorded a snare with Avenson ST0-2s yet. I've used them for kick drums (love it on kicks), overheads (nice if you have a good-sounding room), guitar cabinets, and acoustic guitar (great on the latter two, very natural - especially liked it for acoustic guitar and lead guita...

...and it would sound duller as well because it's clamping down on the high end.

Obviously, you can do a Poor Man's Dolby by recording things really bright and then bringin' down the high end on playback.

I believe you can plug an external mic into the Belkin TuneTalk. Perhaps this might help with the distortion. Perhaps not.

This must be a question that a lot of people wrestle with. I think it's much like a previous poster, Joel H., said - it's "worth it" it you feel it's worth it. Although I am salivating over things like the Great River EQ-1NV and the Speck stuff (I agree, Vince is great) and the Manley Massive Passiv...

:D No, not quite, but y'know, it has similar properties since it has the little scrollwheel on the top. There are of course "ergonomically correct" joysticks out there as well, like the 3M Renaissance thingy. Anyway, after a little bit of use, I could already feel the difference between that and a r...
