I managed to track the problem down to the motor drive control on the power supply. It was so caked up with dirt that had been sucked through the supply by the fan that the dirt was actually shorting out connectors. (Probably had tape particles mixed in.) This is probably the first time in this mach...

Cleaning, and also resoldering, the Molex connectors is on tap for tonight. I'll also check fuses.

Would I be safe in assuming that a supply rail feeding the supply reel motor and capstan motor also feeds the take up motor? Trying to rule out the power supply itself.

Fortunately, I've got the tech manual with schematics, so I'm not flying blind. I was just seeing if anyone else had the same problem and could say, "Oh, yeah! Here's what to do."

You're right. Troubleshooting can be "fun."

MCI JH-110 down for the count!

I fired up my JH-110 last night to record something (for lack of a better thing to do). Threaded up the tape on the take-up side, hit rewind, immediately noticed something wasn't quite right. Hit FF. Nothing happened -- except for tape spilling all over the place. Got it rethreaded, hit FF. Nothing....

At the risk of sounding like an eyeless cave dweller, what is this "Pitchfork" of which you speak?

I'm not sure it matters. The most critical thing is the tape path and tension. As long as the tape is passing over the heads properly, I suppose you could stand it upside down if you wanted.

I was thinking of that. A couple big honkin' L-brackets or something.

But then where am I supposed to put the webcam? I guess I'll need a subwoofer.

From the looks of things, that panel is sort of holding the desk together. If I put the speakers on a shelf above the console, that puts them too high. (Tweeters well above my ears and the woofers halfway between floor and ceiling.) I tried putting the speakers on the desk itself and that made thing...

Redid a few plots at "problem" frequencies. Ran 50Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, and 250Hz. 50Hz was odd. It was stronger on the left side of the room and gradually sloped off as I moved to the right, until I got to the back right corner, where it came up slightly. 100Hz seemed better. Peaks were right where I s...

Working on it. Still trying to make heads or tails out of the different plots. I shouldn't have done sweeps, I should have done individual tones at every spot. Yes?

If anything, I've found that, apart from the dip at 130Hz, my existing treatments have certainly been effective.

Here's another interesting wrinkle..... With the treatments out of the room, I decided to run a tone generator through the speakers and listen with the SPL meter. I rocked the the generator back and forth in the 100-140Hz range until I found the point where the meter read the lowest from the normal ...

So today, I measured out the large area rug in the center of the room (reserved for humans) into a grid of 1ft squares. Set the meter in the center of each square and ran a sweep from 40Hz to 300Hz. Measured in REW and saved each plot. Bottom line. The room's a mess anywhere you measure it when ther...

Been running sweeps with REW; and yes, I've tried panels on the ceilings. They don't seem to make any difference.
