How to eliminate crosstalk in EQ units?
I have a pair of eq modules (Melcor GME-20s). The units themselves sound good, but there is cross talk between them. Someone suggested bypassing the "hot" rails of the shared power supply with a cap (10 nF?) to ground. Does this ring true?
Thanks,
Seth

Racking up Ampex 601
Hi People, This topic has been touched upon in the earlier post "Ampex 601 Mod" but I have questions more specific to rackmounting. Any advice or tips would be most appreciated! I've finally found time to dig through my pile of junked gear, and I'd like to set my 600 and 601s up for rack use. I'm go...

Microphone Silk: What is it and where can I get it?
My understanding is that it's the fabric that encloses the voice unit of a mic to prevent blast. Is it actually silk, or just nylon? Can I make it from hosuehold nylon, or is there a source for more Gucci options?
Thanks much,
Seth

RE: Microphone Silks
Speaking of ribbon mics, anyone have a source for the silk material? Is it simply nylon mesh, or something fancier?
Thanks much,
Seth

RE: Lundahl Transformer
Hogfish,
I'm working on a similar mic, and trying to source a transformer. Am I to infer that the Lundahl 2911 fit in the mic housing? (And did you use the PC board that comes with the transformer as well?)
Thanks much,
Seth

Switchable Input Pad?
I'm sure this topic has been covered before, but I can only seem to find info on static (i.e. non-swatchable) input pads. I'm working on a couple of Ampex 601s and would like to install switchable pad networks. Only question is, which switch to use? I'm assuming I want a DPDT, right? In other words,...

Also, a recap doesn't hurt. You can find small-value caps at http://digikey.com; I recommend Nichicon or Panasonic FC series.

Highly Inexperienced
No offense taken. No, I have never calibrated a deck before. However, I'm fortunate to have some friends who are top-notch engineers, and with their help (and the folks on the message board) I'm finally ready to declare my deck operational. The bias question I posed is still a little confusing to me...

Old Tape?
Thanks folks, that all makes good sense to me. What about the question of using "virgin" or not? The first 3 minutes of my reel have had tones recorded several times on them already. Will one more pass make enough of a difference that I should lop it off and start fresh?
Thanks,
Seth

Studer Woes
Thanks Greg, I actually spoke with a local tech and he recommended I recheck the azimuth. I did, and hadn't realized that there are several spots where the phase "looks" right, but only one is the right one. So I found that spot, and now the treble response is good. Still one problem though: I redid...

Still not right....
Thanks for all the tips, seems like the machine is pretty close. But one thing is still not right: I'm using a +9 reference level, so using my +6 MRL tape, I set the repro level at -3 @ 1K. No problem. But trying to set the treble level, the closest I can get at 10K is -5, and the treble level adjus...

Test Tone Etiquette
I'm getting ready to do my first mixdown to tape, oh boy! (Thank you SO much, folks, for the advice and guidance on calibrating my deck.) What I want to know is: What's the protocol for recording test tones? I think it's 1K, 10K, 15K, and a possible unspecified bass tone, but I don't know much more....

RE: Studer Repro
Thanks Brian, good timing! I just finished with messing some more with the deck. Got the azimuth together, but still no improvement on the level differential. I only have a "minimalist" MRL tape (1 kHz and 10 kHz), and the Studer manual wants 14 kHz as a treble level, but I went ahead and set the tr...

VU gone Haywire?
As far as I can tell with my limited skills, everything is more or less okay, but one thing is perplexing me: I set the VU meters first, as per the manual. I gave both channels a 1K test tone off the computer, and both sides read "0 db" at 1.23v output perfectly. But when using my MRL tape, the chan...
