Re: Podcasts
If you haven't checked out Bill Burr, he's a hysterical comedian. He does a podcast every Monday morning without fail. He calls it "The Monday Morning Podcast". http://www.billburr.com/podcast KCRW here in LA is pretty excellent as far as having great non-mainstream playlists. 2 DJs in particular ha...

Re: Top Ten Albums All Recording Engineers Should Own
This is tough! My tastes run a pretty wide gamut, so this'll be an interesting list: - The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's - 5 words: The Benefit of Mr. Kite. The inventiveness that went into that song alone makes it such an amazing display of sheer mastery of the tape deck, not to mention how catchy of a tu...

Re: Getting an awesome thud out of a kick drum
A really cool technique I got for getting a Bonham-esque kick sound (remember, they weren't about isolation back then... they basically got the entire kit and went with the results a-la When The Levee Breaks at Headley Grange): I put a condenser (4040) up against my 22" kick near the spurs (about 2"...

Got this from a friend today: "I think you should be aware of this scam. A "heads up" for those of you who may be regular Home Depot customers. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naiv...

Well, I think your "ideal" drum room would depend on what kind of sound you want. I have a preference on really "live" sounding rooms that have specific criteria, but since that's my preference, all of my drum sounds have been having that "big" drum sound, and that's not always what I should be goin...

My suggestion: Don't worry about EQ settings (per se)going into the DAW. Worry about what is going into the mics, and how the mics are responding. Case in point: I like "big" sounding toms, so I have the cardioid patterned microphones as close to the top heads to maximize the "proximity" effect. Whe...

Yeah man, I've had the C1000 for years, and when I moved to the LDC (AT 4040), it just opened up a world of frequency ranges and possibilities. I've felt that the C1000 tended to hype up the nasaly frequencies of the vocalists I'd record them on, which made them sound less than desirable (though her...

Update: (from the beginning) My external hard drive was not being read by either of my computers because the file structure had been corrupted. Thinking that I may have to take'er back, I frantically searched for the receipt, but to no avail. So after reading this thread, I looked to find some softw...

20Hz - 20kHz No joke. Record a single drum, have it loop, and mess around with the EQ-plug in... Even a bass drum has high frequencies at the attack, and at SOME point, there are really low frequencies in a cymbal crash. Now, if you're looking for "Sweet spots", that's going to depend on the drum(s)...

My only remotely similar experience was when OSX was having a problem if it was shut down or restarted with firewire drives still mounted, and it would corrupt the directory structure so that the next time the drive was actiated it did not appear readable to the system and Finder offered to reforma...

As far as the cheap stuff goes, Tama stands are great. Beefy and well-machined just like their drum hardware. +1 I have 6 of these and they're awesome for the price. Musicians friend used to sell a kit with 3 normal size ones and 2 short ones for about $150 but now they just seem to have them separ...

you guys are rediculous. ok its all transistors, balanced tranformerless in and out with the option to add transformers for input and output. the board is the size of API board and it rocks. it's very clear and has tons of headroom but still has tone with lots of options so you can use different ca...

Right now, I've got 2 clients with full albums in the works, and I'm charging them $500 for the whole project. I know it's lots of work, but I'm still trying to make a name for myself and get experience and the sorts. However, from what I've learned so far (as far as miking techniques, mixing experi...

(and that?s good-bye to "ass engineer") Ah, those were the days! Yeah, so why not have your friend name it after something he really likes? If not, you could go with Pre-dom, the American Way. if it's transparent, why not the TP? Tee-Pee? Tai Pei? Pro-Sonic Force 1 What about just naming it like, "...
