Re: What are good recording cymbals???

just as important as cymbals, i'd avoid nylon tip sticks as well, unless you just happen to like a freakishly bright cymbal sound.

A Customs rule for everything in my opinion

Re: Classic recordings that are out of tune

i'm surprised no one has mentioned this biggy: the low E string on the bass on Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' (most the album if i remember correctly, Ironman most obviously). makes me laugh every time. the lead guitar on ZZ Top's 'Jesus Just left Chicago' and of course neither of these are no less clas...

Re: Stop me before I mix again!!!

I get really excited about my band's CD and my mixing when I think how it compares nicely (in my mind, anyhow) to old-school late-50's early-60's style mixes, which is what I'm shooting for and why my setup is as it is. However, I can't help but think about the clarity of modern mixes, from Dark Si...

Re: Stop me before I mix again!!!

i think being honest with yourself about what is and isn't possible with what mixing can do is important. not to target anyone specifically here because your recordings might be the greatest things ever, but generally, something recorded with the typical limitations of the DIY recording world isn't ...

Re: Panning techniques for just 1 guitar

interestingly enough, i just listened to Jawbox's 'for your own special sweetheart' lastnight on headphones for the first time and on a lot of the songs they have not one, but TWO guitars straight up the middle, along with bass, bass drum, snare drum, and vocals. i've had this album for years and ne...

Re: Panning techniques for just 1 guitar

i've been through the same issues. here's some options i've tried: -have guitarist play out of two amps simultaneously through a delay pedal, and delay one amp about 20-30 ms. mic both amps/cabs and make sure there is minimal bleed between the 2. pan the non delayed one hard (one side) and the delay...

Re: Which 2" tape deck?

Charles at seaside lounge in brooklyn (www.seasidelounge.com) recently purchased a 3M M56 2" 16 track. To date, he has not reported one thing negative (other than a screw up on his part, having no relation to the brand of machine). I'm about to go use this machine in about a week. I'll report back ...

Re: the more I record, the more I dont get it

i've spent 4-5 hours micing a guitar cabinet as well as throwing up cheap dynamic mics on an entire band in a practice space in about 15 minutes. the practice space recording is almost always more enjoyable to listen to.

it hurts my brain thinking about it.

Re: tape too fat for guides? Huh? (Otari MTR 12)

Anyway, I start to rewind a reel of quantegy 499, and the two guides that are directly outside the heads aren't wide enough for the tape, so they're very quickly slicing tiny bits off the edges of my tape. Wha? i just experienced this over the weekend with a reel of 1/4" 499. we cleaned the guides,...

Re: rockers in the new brunswick, jersey area?

i thought i'd revive this thread to point out that i'm also looking for some drumming gigs in northern Jersey/NYC. i have a nice Sonar kit, zildjian cymbals, and have been playing for a long time. click on my link to here some of my drummin'. i'm looking more for interesting projects/studio/one time...

Re: ZZ Top on CD absolutely ruined!

yeah, hit up the used vinyl bins. there's no shortage of cheap zz top albums in there, especially if you like 'afterburner'...

there are a few 'greatest hits' compilations on cd that have the original versions though.

Re: HELP: tuning guitars, 440hz, wtf?

FWIW, 440 hz is not the open A on a guitar. It's the A at the fifth fret of the high E string. Think about it. The open A is 110 hz. yeah, that was throwing me off too.. "how does it go from 80hz to 440hz with one string?" anyway, there's some great info in this thread, thanks! i guess the bottom l...

Re: HELP: tuning guitars, 440hz, wtf?

The best rule of thumb (for me) is to get the natural tuning instruments down first anddo keys later... like you said you're going to be doing. It's easier to "fix" a midi keyboard as far as pitch than gtr in the end. There are plenty of things that a keyboard can do in order to correct fine-tune p...

HELP: tuning guitars, 440hz, wtf?

i've noticed on some keyboards, synths, even digital recorders, say they tune to 440hz. i've noticed that keyboards seem a little flat (i THINK it was flat, it's been awhile) when you tune a guitar to a typical guitar tuner.. so what frequency do your every day type guitar tuners go off of? i'm gonn...
