i wish i still lived there in some ways. the studio 'scene' there can be a little lame, but it's cool to know there are some tape oppers there!

i added a new song to the page last night if anyone cares. it's the one called 'littleton', and it's a bit slower/more ambient than the other stuff.

i can't think of any records from the early 80s that sonically hold up as well as the birthday party and the first few nick cave albums (edit: the later mission of burma recordings come close). i don't necessarily even think they're that 'hi-fi' really, but the way they avoided every 80s trend as we...

The most important thing I learned from this project: spend the time to get the sounds right as you record them or pay in precious time trying to make them sound right later. Ugh. tell me about it. i'm in the middle of remixing an old record of mine that didn't turn out the way i wanted... jumping ...

it sounds mostly good. the one thing that popped out at me was the 'right' overhead. the smaller crash and the high hat are both really brash and too loud; to the point of where it makes the drums 'lean' to the right. you could probably tame it a little in the mix, but next time i'd try to back up t...

We did a record there over the summer. Studio A had 16 track 2", and 2 track 1/2", both A and B had 8 track 1". Nice place. i believe their mixdown decks are 1/4" (at least when i was there), but yeah, it is a nice place. the live room in studio A sounds great. (they link one of my songs on their e...

i personally listen to stuff like ELP or whatever to feel better about my own recordings. it's pretty hilarious to imagine them spending months in a great studio to come up with such shitty results. Tarkus!! i don't mind freakish engineering as long as there's a reason to do so (it fit's into the th...

check out this place www.seasidelounge.com. it's not quite williamsburg (it's in park slope) and they use 2" 16tk not 1", but everything else sounds like what you need.

yeah, i'm starting to really appreciate how a good room sound on a guitar can make it more energetic. (or at least create a context to make other elements seem more energetic) you hear that in a lot of silkworm records (also albini recordings)

my new record ('mathrock', noiserock, whatever)

hello, i wanted to put this up months ago, but of course the board was down. anyway, i have a couple of new tracks up on my myspace page and wanted to share it with you all. i recorded this at electrical audio in chicago onto 2" 16track. i mostly love the way it sounds but i still like critical feed...

Re: What's the trick to stereo guitars?

ugh, there's always gotta be someone who brings up joy division and my bloody valentine, as if they are the single best bands who ever walked the earth, and that i had somehow forgotten about them. gee, a little touchy? i just thought i'd point out a few bands who don't use chorus effects in typica...

Re: What's the trick to stereo guitars?

but, seriously, chorus has to be the single lamest effect next to vocoding.
worked for joy division and my bloody valentine..

as far as the original question, if you decide to double and hard pan, try using different amps for each side. sounds a little thicker that way

Re: Bob Weston's sound

bob posts on the electrical audio board occasionally. go read 'em and you'll probably find some tidbits about his 'sound'. i like his recordings for shipping news, consonant, polvo, shiner (splay), arcwelder, and new brutalism a lot. one interesting thing about his recordings is he doesn't pan guita...

Re: compression on whole mix?..but I LIKE it already!

i've tried buss compression with an RNC and it's not pretty. the gains aren't worth the losses even at subtle settings.. if you can rent a nice compressor for a day, try a slow attack, fast release, and a threshold of maybe 6/1 and see if it helps.. i think buss compression is overrated anyway and i...

I remember when he cirulcated a petition to get Emtec to change those stupid purple reel flanges on SM900! Now there's a man who cares.
