Micro A - hardware
Micro B - plug in
Micro C - Devil Loc

Panning is correct for air drumming, and let’s be honest; that’s all that matters!
Looks like I'm buying yet another plugin!
Also, I bet if the MicroLimiter was brand new, not a 35 year old device, it would be even closer to B.

I've started to use Pro Tools "clip gain" a lot more before putting a compressor on it - that way I can get a little compression without the compressor pumping and maybe some color if that is desired.
Like i've said a few times already, Fucking CLIP GAIN is the FUCKING GOAT.

Re: when I don't or do compress

I seem to compress everything at some point. Kick and Snare while tracking. Bass while tracking Vocals while tracking. Then all those will get compressed again while mixing, (along with keys and guitars) either on individual tracks, or busses, or parallel busses, or all of those. Main drum buss will...

Re: Microlimiter Love

Alright, here is a soundclooud link. I even made it a blind test. https://soundcloud.com/velvetaudiolouky/sets I had the input all the way up, the release all the way down on both and matched levels as best I could. There is also unaffected drums and a wildcard. Enjoy! Very cool, and thanks for sha...

I feel like the Devil-Loc might get into similar territory but it always seems more gritty to me (which is cool too).
I was thinking the same thing... Really liking the Devil-Loc these days.

Another classic box that somehow I've never owned. Borrowed one a few times, loved it.

Oh geez just talking about this got me price checking online. I've spent more on an overdrive pedal. I might have to buy one just because.

FMR Products

Somehow... I've been doing this stuff for over 25 years and I've still yet to use or own a RNC (Real Nice Compressor). Those were the RAGE here back in the day. Anyone still using them? The RNLA also got a lot of love here. Anyone used their "Vintage-y" compressor? Has the quality of plug ins pretty...

yeah, I'll never forget the feeling of a firecracker going off in my hand either. I'm lucky to still have hands/fingers as well!

Re: fear for fingers

when I was probably about 16, it was summer, and I was playing around with some old gas powered model airplanes that were actually my Dad's when he was a kid (with the little .049 engines) and I stupidly got my hand in the way of the propeller. And if I recall I had some super hard fiberglass prop ...

Ok, I think a lot of this is coming together in my head now. Thanks for these explanations. I'll spend a bit of time reading about gain staging and keep tinkering.

Cheers!
And don't forget, if it sounds good, then that is all that matters.

, if I understand you correctly the input gain/trim should be set at 0 to avoid further noise being introduced.
Ahh, sorry, didn't see that you've already been suggested this.
