Re: The bottom of the snare

As someone who has owned nothing but 100 watt tube amps or very loud old Peavey solid state amps for guitar amps, I really do need to get some lower wattage amps that excel in the studio. The Pro Jr. sounds pretty fucking cool. I miss my one knob Epiphone head. That was great in the studio. Cool......

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

Ever tried the Avedis MA5? I've got one and I put it on my bass drum (kick if you prefer) and it's never left that spot. I tried it once for a female vocal and it was awful (just too much for her) but I should try it on some other stuff again. I always forget and grab something else. And on kick it...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

A pair of these for my Oktava MK-012's as well as Sennheiser 416 shotgun mics. Really good shock mounts, especially for the price!. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ULH5HSW?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details and some of these, for mounting shotgun mics on various places instead of using ugly ass g...

If you are going for the sound of records made when the 1073 etc. were NEW, then get NEW 1073s.

If you are going to wax nostalgic about "vintage" stuff, then get a vintage one.
I don't have the time or money for waxing nostalgia about vintage crap.

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

These look fun. https://www.audiomaintenance.com/acatalog/aml-17-038_extended_info.html I just pulled the trigger on a second 5003D (used) today - it's an older pre that was not a kit - but you'll notice that it looks pretty similar to that one... https://vintageking.com/aml-5003d looks like a pret...

Real 1073s are so stupidly priced right now that I don't even look anymore. 12k for one channel? Eat me.
Holy fuck, that's ridiculous.

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

We sold our vintage Fairchild 666 to a collector. It wasn't a very useful compressor. Kind of a one trick thing but we got so much dough for it we were able to get an Undertone UnFairchild 670 that works and sounds great and is much more of an asset to the studio plus we were able to pocket some ca...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

And whatever happened to the 1272 love? Those were a big deal here before the stand alone 1073 came about. Granted, weren't the 1272 just buss amps changed into a pre amp? But there was a craze for a second.

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

I'm not specifically talking "vintage" since Neve also makes current 1073 preamps. except then they are still just clones right? I mean even if Rupert did work there, or helped design it, or whatever, its still likely to differ as component choices and availability changed. And Neve is AMS, AMEK, R...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

So one question might be "what kind of shape are the originals in?". I wonder if it's like those old Silvertone amps, where the really desirable sound is when enough resistors have drifted in value. I love those old Silvertone amps. Have you seen that new pedal that supposedly does the sound? https...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

Very happy tracking with a bunch of 500 format Great Rivers into RND551 EQs, here. The GR's Loading switch plus four high-quality transformers in that combo definitely take you to a very familiar sonic place. I haven't had a chance to hear it next to a real-deal 1073, but I don't really miss that. ...

Because, yeah, vintage gear is a pain in the ass for upkeep. Agreed.
