Re: Kids *prefer* the sizzle of MP3s...
I'm an aging analog buff and not inherently hostile to the argument, but ... How do today's mp3s compare to the heavily EQed and specially mastered 45s from the golden age of pop? Esp as they were played over AM radios? I'd think mp3s would sound better, but I haven't A-Bed them. But that's the anal...

You might want to hold off for a couple of weeks, if you can. New MBPs are rumored to drop mid-month, with "aggressive pricing." Even if you decide not to go for a new one, I would bet refurbs will drop in price as well. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/09/10/apple_notebook_overhaul_rumored_f...

The two you cite are Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs reissues. This audiophile label makes use of the "Original Master Recording" as a kind of promotional banner as well as a statement of philosophy, about which you can read more here: http://www.mofi.com/productcart/pc/viewcontent.asp?idpage=4. In short...

I have a Mandobird IV that I cobbled together out of parts from eBay (and the bits of an VIII waiting in my shop for a bridge). Good fun, and it's my 2-year-old's favorite ax. Don't do what I did and buy the "special" electric mandolin strings offered on eBay. Brutally stiff. Next time I get strings...

Since this thread has attracted some knowledgeable posters, perhaps someone can help me. I, too, have a low-ceiling basement space ? which I finished with drywall ceiling before I knew it would be a studio space. (Damn. I'd have much preferred hanging burlap on the ceiling to renting a drywall jack)...

Sinatra recorded an album (The Concert Sinatra) on 35mm film in 1963. From Charles Granata's amazing "Sessions with Sinatra": "...The proceedings were preserved via a Westrex 35mm recording system: a sprocket-type multihead-head magnetic recorder, utilizing 35mm recording film for the greatest possi...

I think eveyrone who has respect for music and writing has felt what you feel. That's why I also think cultivating a temporary, completely unrealistic (or hell, realistic) sense of superiority to your heroes is a handy technique for creators. There may be people out there who actually do hate the Be...

The Art Institute is one of the world's great museums and should not be missed. And Millenium Park is pretty great. And I love Guitar Works in Evanston (http://www.guitarworksltd.com/). Musically, these may be outside your normal listening, but if you have big ears and can score seats, the Chicago S...

Always liked Ram. I don't know about lo-fi, tho. It was recorded at CBS and A&R Studios in New York, with Phil Ramone among the engineers. Hugh McCracken and David Spinozza were the guitarists on the sessions, and the New York Philharmonic appears on a couple of tracks. Probably pretty state of the ...

Re: vox pathfinder or epiphone valve jr.
Don't have the Epi, so I can't compare, but as a satisfied Pathfinder owner I thought I'd point out its distinctively Vox-like attack. When I first plugged into mine, plucked a string, and heard that satisfying "thoink" I immediately thought of "Twist and Shout" and thought: "So that's where the Bea...
