new Joan Shelley album

Been cleaning the studio today and listening to this beauty... "Like the River Loves the Sea". a little like a gentle country lilting joni mitchell. very folky and soft beds of acoustic guitar. It's a recent release but has a very old school velvety texture to it and would love to know about the rec...

Re: Bass Plugins

the context of bass within a MBV song vs what many of the rest of us record is likely quite different! Those mixes are so dense with so much guitar midrange for the bass to fight against. That said - there are certainly better and worse instruments out there and some will amplify problems in techniq...

Re: Using reverb to differentiate lead and backing vocals

- Does everyone in the mix get the same reverb (i.e. plugin, or box setting, or spring, same model of a room, hall, or plate etc)? nope. unless the goal is to have it sound choral and all meshed together as one large ensemble - otherwise treat differently to create contrast and separation - Does the...

Re: Bass Plugins

there are so many pre amps with great di's... SOLO 610 (wooly and rich), Great River/Chandler TG2 - punchy, Germanium - creamy! Louder than liftoff Chroma with N module - amazing drive and punch.. haven't used a DI box in years. Would love to hear that ACME motown DI - curious if it's really unique ...

Re: 500 series mixer aux send?

still might be helpful to have more detail... 500 series are missing lots of features of a mixer. I monitor my converters on a board (soundcraft ghost) which I frequently use the aux send to fx when tracking - space echos... spring reverbs... sans amps.... works absolutely great. What are you hoping...

dbx 160x acting strange

I am selling a dbx 160x that I never use... Tried it a few months ago and it worked fine... took it out of the rack and put on Craigslist... finally a buyer actually shows up yesterday and of course it's acting up. The gain reduction meters are stuck on red and although it sounds like it's working f...

Re: electrovoice 635A

this is a cool mic - unless you want really modern, zippy, super sized sounds. also being an omni it won't be as tight of a focus on the pattern front so expect something a little more roomy/distant than a cardoid. It's quite smooth for a dynamic and I have used it a lot on vocals - some lead and bg...

Re: Advice on next steps to move setup forward

ps - the fat bustard summing box would be a great addition - Peter Katis mixes though one (with other outboard patched in) and gets incredible results.

Re: Advice on next steps to move setup forward

i'll be the contrarian here.... I really don't think most artists care about whether you have a console or a tape machine. They come to you because you do great work and people like to work with you - PERIOD. So many elder statesman engineers whom i respect are moving away from consoles and tape mac...

Re: Onboard Guitar Pre-Amps/Boosters

Is the issue is that you often switch pickups in the same song and don't want to have to always hit a pedal?

Re: people with consoles

I never power down my board (Soundcraft Ghost) or power amp (Bryston) unless I am going on holidays and it would be down for a week or more.
