Re: Recording Chain notation
my usual is to write the vocal chain and settings down on the lyric sheet as that seems to be the thing most likely to recall. I have notebooks dated for the year that I write down my outboard summing set up down for mix projects as well - i can recall any song in about 5 minutes. I also have dedica...

Re: how often are you using non cardioid patterns?
as mentioned, the nulls of a fig8 can be really useful for isolation in live situations and sound much less ambient than omni. I also like using them for blumlein in front of a kit. I sometimes use omni on something like percussion which i don't want to feel like it's RIGHT INSIDE MY EAR and then ha...

Re: making a mix room in a long narrow space
Thanks for the responses guys. it would be a good chamber if I tiled the whole room or did something to make the walls a lot more reflective but having a separate mix room is a much bigger priority for me as I am doing more and more mixing and have a medium size studio that I could rent out a bit to...

making a mix room in a long narrow space
I have a room that is unused 95% of the time that I am considering setting up as a dedicated mix space and possibly also have an iso booth for overdubs in there. The space is long and narrow with fairly high ceilings. There's no treatment yet of any kind but before I even entertain the idea I'm wond...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck
I was speaking with a local producer/engineer who also happens to be a great bassist about bass tone and DI and he and another local fantastic player have been through all the fancy high end ones (Reddi, Acme, Je-DI) and have both settled now on the JDI as their favorite (into a nice tube pre)... th...

printing individual tracks in multiple passes through a tape machine
so *SPOILER ALERT* if you were following the other tape thread yesterday about the fostex R8. It is dead and tech called it "unrepairable" which actually means "so many problems, it would cost more than the machine is worth to fix it". Fair enough. It wasn't a great machine and hadn't been used in 5...
