Re: unhyped kick drum mic

The most unhyped class of mics I can think of is omnis and pzms and I've gotten cool sounds with both of those on the intact resonant head with something like a D112 or e602 by the beater. Interesting - i have used a Stapes omni here and liked it a lot but curious how/where you'd place the PZM to m...

Re: Time for some home studio upgrades...help me spend $10K

A friend was just today reco'ing to me the Chroma +. I have a Chroma 500 and its pretty great. I use the Royal Blue (Neve) transformer in it and the tone shaping options it has on board are useful and can go from clean to full on blistering fuzz. I love this on guitars but it's impressive on vocals...

Re: recording group vocals

Thanks - i might try something like that...

My room is fairly controlled but I have often found that omni just sounds further away than cardoid or figure of 8.

recording group vocals

I have done a fair bit of gang vocals and some "small choir" stuff but I'm looking for some fresh input on different ways to do this well. Tomorrow I'll be recording a group of kids (6) and I'm not sure that recording it as a stereo pair makes tons of sense with such a small group. (We will likely r...

Radiohead loves Neve stuff for recording. They also recorded their biggest album at Ocean Way LA,
side bar... You consider HAIL TO THE THIEF their biggest album? Bigger than OK COMPUTER? KID A or IN RAINBOWS?

Re: Time for some home studio upgrades...help me spend $10K

This is a tough question to answer... to know how to best help it may be helpful for you answer this question: What are you struggling with the most in your work? Mixes that translate well? Capturing rich tones? I have a bunch of different outboard eqs and I like them all on different things and non...

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

I think it was worth it - they sound a little smoother and fuller. Used mostly on electric guitar and sometimes acoustic guitar so far. I have the orange and yellow mods.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

i added the Crimson audio mods to 2 of my 57s to make them a little more useable after swearing off 57s for the better part of 10 years... they have their uses.

Re: "Getting it right on the way in": Channel strips, risk

i'm gonna try and say this in a non-gearslutz kinda way bottom line is "if YOU think it sounds cooler - go for it". Whatever is inspiring you is good. I'm a big proponent of commiting to sounds on the way in and using as much outboard as I can get my hands on while tracking to make things sound grea...

The $2 solution: A hardware store coat hook & a hose clamp.
I knew someone would have something like this - i love tape op.

you think it will support the weight ok and not slip?

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

hard to answer without knowing a little more: what type of music are you typically recording? what kind of kick sound do you like the best?

re20 will offer most flexibility and is the least "pre eq'd" of these options.

Re: connecting turntable to console

what started me down this path was actually a buddy who got a Audio technica TT this christmas and it doesn't require an external phono preamp - upon reading the specs I found that it's built in to the TT. Smart feature! It might actually be cheaper to pick up one of those used than to buy a phono p...

Re: connecting turntable to console

You want to use a PHONO PREAMP. Records are mastered with the RIAA EQ curve and requires a phono preamp that applies the reverse of the RIAA curve for "accurate" playback. Line out won't give you that. Thanks for the explanation, I assumed it was more than just a level make up stage and now I under...
