Re: Question: side chain compression' what, why and how

in cubase the native compressor and gates have a little toggle to enable the sidechain. Once that is turned on then you can use an aux send from any other channel to send to that comp or gate. this is fancy, sophisticated mix stuff so if you are relatively new and it seems hard to get - i wouldn't w...

Re: 16 more channels of analog compression

my 2 bits is that if it doesn't enhance tone - and just does gain reduction - you should save your money and use plug ins. They are fine for "utility" style use. RNC fell into this category for me. If you want to add texture / tone / harmonics then there's lots of great options and alternative to th...

Re: Space Echo RE-201 Questions

shane is a good guy and I have bought lots of parts from him and he's been immensely helpful to me. I Love my 201 and use it ALL THE TIME for tracking - but - it has also been the biggest pain in the butt to keep running well and techs often don't really know how to fix these as there are so many va...

Re: HOT mix/mastering levels and streaming services

No offense intended, but why not hire a dedicated mastering engineer to handle this stuff? I'm always able to get a loud mix at home, but something about the way a mastering guy does it is usually much more full range and huge sounding without neutering the dynamics. Any time I've sent a mix to my ...

Re: HOT mix/mastering levels and streaming services

I am aware of the loudness penalty - the strange thing I am finding thought is that certain tracks will still have a louder perceived fullness and that It was i am curious about. What types of compressors or limiters do this most transparently while doing extreme gain reduction? I have been using th...

Re: Clip-On Tuners?

i use the snarks a lot for acoustic instruments that don't have pickups (guitar/banjo/mando/upright) and have never had any conflicts with tuning.

HOT mix/mastering levels and streaming services

I'm working with some different artists who are on a label that is very focussed on Spotify. (I'm sure that's fairly common now that it's the primary way music is consumed.) They want their songs to "pop" a bit more on the playlists and my preference is generally to not go too aggressive with compre...

Re: leslie speakers and stereo recording

thanks for the feedback guys - I did the corner set up as described and find I am liking that better... ironically, I used to do it that way and moved away from it for some reason.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I’ve looked at Meris a few times over the years but what kind of bugs me is the secret button presses...ive never been able to try one in person (without purchasing) to confirm my fears. What do you think? I don't think they are that intense - the reverb especially is pretty straight forward. The P...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I’ve been selling odds and ends around the studio to fund some new toys. Sold a few old pedals that I never use and picked up a few new ones. Got 2 Meris pedals - The Polymoon (delay) and Mercury 7 (reverb). Pretty impressed with both so far but the reverb (ultraplate mode) has really blown me away ...

leslie speakers and stereo recording

hey all... i have a leslie 710 that I have been recording mostly just doing a stereo set of mics on the horns on either side of the leslie about 1.5 feet or so back... directly facing each other. (I don't usually bother with a bass mic as there's usually a strong bass presence on the song already an...

Re: Downsizing advice

I'm going into this process and looking at it as sort of a restart so pairing down to the bare min is kind of an idea that I really like right now. Going to a small interface and computer instead of a console is gonna allow your set up to be much smaller and more portable. Having 1 or 2 high qualit...

Re: Downsizing advice

it's kinda hard to answer without knowing what you primarily use your gear for... that said - anything that hasn't been touched in a year is on the chopping block around here. better to have 5 things you use ALL THE TIME than 15 that barely get used ever , that you could borrow or rent if needed at ...
