Hmmm...just checked the original again. Hate the snare sound, but otherwise that's a really solid mix. I think you're right that it could be a good education for my next shot at my mix. Thanks again!

Thanks, JWL. Yeah, I agree about the verb.I thought it sounded a little strange too, but haven't yet been able to come up with something better. Will give it another shot!

Thanks, Snarl - appreciate the listen and the detailed feedback. Nope, didn't base my mix on the original, partially because it's such a different approach to the tune, but also because my voice is about an octave lower than Duritz's. I find I always have to pull a lot of info out of bass/guitars/ki...

Yes, I know this is not the coolest band/song; I'd be grateful if anyone had a couple of minutes to offer any thoughts on the mix. Thanks!

How's the Mix? Excerpt of Counting Crows' Rain King cover

Hey Y'all: Would love to get peoples' opinions on the mix for a cover of Counting Crows' "Rain King" that I'm doing. I feel like it's coming together ok, but I'm still having trouble clearing space for the baritone lead vocal and getting the kick/snare to sit right in the track. It's a quick listen ...

Hmmm...no takers, eh? Maybe I should've included a pic of some fun gear? Well, no swanky ribbon mics were used, but here's a shot of the main vocal mic, a Bock 195 (which I am really digging, btw).

Well, that's how this started out, anyway. It ended up more like?like?well, I don't quite know. More guitars than the original, that's for sure. Anyway, would love to get others' perspectives on the mix; any showstoppers here? Here's the mix: https://soundcloud.com/radionowhere/royals-master-51314/s...

Okay, for anyone who might still be interested, I've taken another crack at mixing this song - you can check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/radionowhere/spyboy-vbc-3/s-ZowBi I feel pretty good about how this is sounding right now, but as before, would love to get some outside perspective. If yo...

Cool responses, everybody - thanks for taking the time! Interesting to see how many and which issues pop up for multiple people...and which ones don't. Like, I would never have guessed that "improper monitoring" was such a widespread issue. Totally get the "lack of allies" and "finding time to track...

One Man/Woman Productions - What Are the Biggest Things That

Hey People: I know there are a lot of jack-of-all-trades, one person operations out there who are writing, performing, recording and mixing their own music. I spent today doing just that myself (again), bumping up against all the usual obstacles that either slow me down or call a complete halt to th...

Thanks, Nick. Yeah, I've been having trouble with the low end, in that most of my previous mixes have had overpowering kick/bass energy around 100hz. "So turn it down at 100hz!", I can hear everyone saying...I tried that, of course, with eq, compression, and multiband compression, but just haven't b...

Hmmm...no takers, eh? Maybe I should've included a pic of some cool gear? Well, I didn't record to tape using pure unicorn mane cabling or anything, but here's a shot of the main vocal mic, a Bock 195 (which I am really digging, btw). Seriously, though, any thoughts on the mix welcome :D .... http:/...

Alternative Singer/Songwriter Swamp Hop - Thoughts?

Hi Everybody: I'm hoping to get some useful critiques of a sort of unusual alternative singer/songwriter mix I've been working on; this one mixes swampy tremolo guitar with vaguely hip-hop loopy bass/drums and a sample or two. I would love to get any feedback/perspectives from anyone who would be so...
