Firewire Drive & Interface, what order?
What order does everyone put their firewire devices in, drive and then interface, or interface and then drive? I seem to remember reading in an 002R Getting Started guide that you should always connect the interface first, and then daisy-chain to the hard drive. But I've also heard people say you sh...

rent PZM's in Boston, Feb 24-25
I need to rent a pair of PZM's for a session which will probably occur on Feb 24-25. If you're in the Boston area (and preferably T accesible) and might be able to help me out please drop a line.

Uh... anybody? My intution is that Low Latency Monitoring happens in the analog realm before the computer, just like if you were listening off aux sends on a mixer. In which case the anwer would be no, it doesn't consume any CPU. But I was just curious if anyone knew for sure. My real problem is tha...

Huh... that's funny, I never noticed the "Sound Enhancer" feature. I still think they might have been talking about "Soundcheck" since they are talking about burning cd's. I've always assumed it is some sort of limiter, and it's available as an option both in Playback and in Advanced>Burning. On one...

NY Times article: Ry Cooder mastering with "Soundcheck&
Anyone else see this article in today's (1.22.07) New York Times? http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/22/technology/22cooder.html?_r=1&oref=slogin It says Ry Cooder used the "Soundcheck" feature in iTunes to master his most recent release. The article sort of makes it sound like that's all he used, which...

Does Low Latency Monitoring Effect CPU usage in PT?
Does enabling Low Latency Monitoring in Pro Tools take any toll on the amount of CPU being used up? I just got the MBox 2 Pro, and also upgraded to PT 7.1. I use both with my Powerbook G4, with (gasp...) only 512 MB of RAM. In the past the computer worked okay with both an MBox 1 and Digi 002R. But ...

I agree with everything being said on the thread. "Vanity Disc" does seem like a bit of a derogatory term, and it's becoming less relevant. I just want to add that there's nothing wrong with a band or artist wanting to document their music to the best of thier ability - in a medium that allows them ...

Johnny B- A good point. NYC is mad expensive. I'm writing this from my friend's couch in Greenwich village, and I've come to scope things out, spend a few days in the big city, and see how it feels. Right now, I'm leaning towards moving! I have a good network of friends here - none involved in recor...

Tiger Vomit (a fine screen name, by the way) - I assume you're saying "do or do not, there is no try". Fair enough. But still - hypothetical situation. Two equally talented engineers, one lives in a major music center, the other in a secondary market. How different are thier careers, or thier income...

What's the intern/assistant scene like in NYC?
I'm thinking about moving to New York City/Brooklyn, and I'm trying to figure out how the pieces would fall into place. I've been interning for a year at a well known studio in Boston, and also did one semester at a post facility. I just finished up at Berklee College of Music a week ago, and I can ...

nudging drum tracks for phase issues
I found a cool little Pro Tools trick tonight and just wanted to share it. If you are nudging drum tracks to listen for phase issues, you can do a whole bunch of small nudges, then open up the Undo History window (under Windows menu in 6.9). Now, you can see exactly how many times you nudged the tra...

Wow! Awesome responses, tons of food for thought, and lots of information... I haven't entirely absorbed it yet, but want to respond to one or two things. from Professor : "Are you going to do a good service to the combo and to the music by doing the mastering? I'm not doubting your own particular s...
