Sounds like you'd be best served by the "Insert strip silence" function. You familiar? I only use ITB gates but the key thing (no pun intended) I found was to get the gate level set as low as possible, and on gated tracks to have the source as loud as possible ... It took me many hours to figure out...

Luckily the Drawmer gates have an adjustable release time. The spring decay never lasts more than 1.5 seconds. And that is enough time for the gate to close. Does your gate snap shut? I've noticed that with some gates, but there is usually a setting for that parameter. Which one are you using? Cool ...

Taming Noisy Spring Reverb when mixing

I mix out of the box 100% of the time, and only use a Plate Reverb, a Demeter Spring Reverb, a TC Electronics M350 and some tape echos for ambiance. I have always had to hit mute on the spring reverb return channels on the board in quiet passages or at the beginning and end of the song because they ...

Finalizing

You should take a photo of the buss comp's settings and bypass it before you print stems.
They should all hit the threshold together, not separately.

Upright bass mixing

The best sound I have ever gotten out of my upright is by shoving one of those DIY mini-omni mics into the actual wooden bridge hole pointing at the bass. Here is a link to make the mic. http://tinyurl.com/6upelak It gets a great blend of string attack, boom, and it's pretty easy to tape it in place...

Oh man really?! I will have to stash mine next time I am mad-dogging a client. Wouldn't want the bad vibes to get in the springs. Spring reverbs can pick up a lot more than just magnetic interference from your speakers. I have an Orban111b and it has to be in a closet in the hallway to keep it from ...

George shows you how to EQ

Why not let the master show you?

I found the videos on this page really helpful in terms of explaining subtractive EQ, which was previously a huge mystery to me.

I still use additive EQ in the mids BTW.

Embarrassingly it was right under the speaker in a rack.

Doh!
Brett Siler wrote:I didn't know that. How close did you have the unit? My Tapco spring reverb is about 6 feet away from my monitors, but it is also pretty quiet.

Spring Reverb Issue

You all probably already knew this, but you have to keep your spring reverb unit away from your speakers, I guess the magnetic field gets into the signal. Can't believe I just learned about this. I have been bitching about how noisy my Furman spring reverb is for ages. Now that I moved her she is de...

Cool Springs Reverb Unit

Hello folks, I am selling my Coolsprings reverb unit, it is the medium and short tray version, they are going for more than 500 new, I will take 300 or any really cool offers. I would trade it for a stereo comp or a good transformer balanced preamp. This unit was used on the Local Natives record, I ...
