firewire or pci
Well... where to start. 1st, these are just "generalities". I'm not a tech and theres always some exception one can find out there. So.. PCI card is only possible in a desk/tower computer with PCI slots. Firewire or USB are your only choice for a laptop. As far as which way to go if you have the opt...

Go for full version of Reason 4
Props are offering great deals on their in house produced refills packaged with Reason 4. Now is a great time to move to the full version, you won't regret it. I've gradually stopped using most of my hardware synths, drum machines, samplers and usually reach for Reason first. Start a tune, Rewire up...

RAM is so cheap, you should make sure you have at least 2 gigs worth, if your computer will take that much. If not just load it up to max.. Can't give you all the tech jargon but you're guaranteed to see a big difference. I don't know your DAW program but with Digital Performer you can change your b...

DP 6
The general word on the street is that DP6 is more efficient in terms of cpu usage. They supposedly have taken care of some of the internal bloating that happens as programs get added to. Better fighting weight. They say it runs better even on older macs than 5 did. If you haven't used DP much I wou...

Another vote for internal in terms of cost.
check OWC - macsales.com - for competitive prices on either option.

The old 'Which Mac?' question
Have an end of 2007 MacBook Pro, 2.2 Ghz, Intel, running 10.4.11, MAudio Firewire 410 interface, OWC external firewire drive daisy chained off the back of the 410, Digital Performer and Reason in Rewire mode, usually only 1 mic at a time, sometimes 2. So far no problems. the single firewire bus seem...

Recording Vinyl on M-audio Firewire 410
Slight correction. The 410 has 2 mic/line inputs on the front and 2 line ins on the back so you could you use either set. But you still need a phono preamp between the turntable and the 410.

Recording Vinyl on M-audio Firewire 410
The 410 allows for 2 or stereo ins. I have an inexpensive phono preamp from Radio Shack that has worked fine for years. Turntable outs into phono preamp, phono preamp outs into 410. 410 Firewire into computer. The left/right - stereo situation is dealt with in your recording software. In Bias Peak y...

UAD compatibility
Go to the Universal Audio web site and dig around. They have lots of specific info on what the cards work with, what systems are problematic. They actually answer the phone too if you give them a call. The pci or pcie question definitely has to be answered. On Macs there's a Profiler you can go to t...

RN Plugins
I would definitely check into the UAD PCI, PCIe cards or Expander products. Depending on your system, they can add a lot of freed up processing power as well as a wide range of plug ins. Check out the review a few issues back in Tape Op. Also there's a recent review in Tape Op of the Focusrite Liqui...

UAD Card
The card(s) are actually very worthwhile. It's a bit of an investment at first but it frees up a lot of processing power and I, for one, am very happy with the sound of their plugs. (You will find a wide variety of opinions about how they sound). They offer a variety of credits for more plugs when y...

kids these days
Friend of mine has been playing his tunes over the past year for Junior College studio/recording classes. Brings in a drummer, bass player, he plays guitar and sings. Gives the kids something live to practice recording. Well, at the last session he did, the kids were amazed that the drummer was goin...

taming a loud section
I agree with some of the other posts, it's a live performance, a moment captured. A little compression to tame it slightly wouldn't hurt but nothing bad there. Like an old Son House recording, mumbling sometimes, shouting sometimes. If you're working on a computer, download the free Vinyl Plug from ...

mp3's on myspace
I didn't seem to have a problem with my music. I used Peak to convert to mp3 files. Under Save As chose the mp3 choice, there's an option bubble, set quality at Best and chose either 320 or 256 depending on how long my song was. There's a limit on file size on the myspace page. Listening over my stu...
