Weezer made start playing music. Weezer made me start writing songs. Weezer made me start writing good songs with melody and structure. Weezer made me start writing lyrics that were genuine. Weezer was my impetus for music and I am thankful. Their later records, became formulaic because Rivers Cuomo...

adventures in sound
Just for a fun sound experiment you might try this. In Propellerheads Reason when I'm just experimenting with sound I'll create 12 different instruments then use the reason vocoder as a 12 band equalizer putting one on each of the 12 isntruments. Then i'll assign each instrument 1 of the 12 bands fr...

requesting a 16bit depth vs 24 bit depth audio comparison
I've been searching high and low for aiff files demonstrating the difference between recorded audio at 16/44 at 24/44 bit/sample rates. I've seen spectral analyses and read all the claims and articles praising 24 bit as thousands to millions of colors but i really want to hear it with my own two ear...

Maybe its iTunes making duplicates of your music. I often times will take a DVD of mp3s i've backed up and copy them to my Desktop in a hurry rather then importing via iTunes. Then when I add them to iTunes later it copies them a second time to ~/Music/iTunes Music if I forgot to turn off that optio...

Thanks you both for the excellent responses. I am on a budget and opted for the Alesis 3630 for 99 bucks, although a dbx model at 150 was tempting. Down the road I'll take a look at ART or maybe something snazzier. Maybe this is crazy but I find that having this compressor now pre computer I can rel...

Have you gotten a quote yet from Apple? For the prices of the new screens you might be able to get them to replace it and do the work for you. When they quoted me a repair on a problem I had out of warranty the lady told me there is a one flat fee fix rate for most issues no matter if you had 1 thin...

For finding new music with minimal elbow grease I have found that the KCRW: All Songs Considered Podcast on iTunes is fantastic. There are also some great songwriter podcasts, several other public radio live performances, even one from BMI with more commercial stuff thats on the verge of "breaking"....

I listened to Inside Home Recordings podcast recently and this was a topic. The point they were trying to make was that there are people using OS9 or Windows 98 with yellowed keyboards and flickering CRTs making great records with a DAW and some hardware. It helps me rationalize my thinking I need a...

Budget Compressor and Managing Multiple Gains
I've been enjoying all the great advice there is to soak in here. I truly learn something new everyday on this board. I have a question though. I've also been listening to the Inside Home Recording podcast lately and last night there was a segment on hardware vs. plugin compression. I'm seeing the v...

Whatever you do don't get a USB 2.0 external drive they work poorly with OS X in my experience. Stick with firewire. Especially one that is not powered as it has to draw its energy from the computer or laptop. I've also had bad luck with Western Digital. I would recommend Maxtor, something with a hi...

The new MacBooks have Intel chips and boot to Windows XP if you need. I think that offers the most versatility. One thing you may consider and I usually advise friends when purchasing a computer is to wait until you truly need it. By fall and without fail the computers (dell or apple) will all be sp...

I think this is an insightful quote (of course it applys only to certain styles). "I think if a song sounds good on just and acoustic guitar, then it is good. That's a song as opposed to a track. A lot of modern records are just tracks, and if you take away the production then they cease to exist." ...
