Yeah, I'm shooting to have tons of stuff in there to help diffuse sound. I own so much shit that I don't think I'd have a choice anyway.
Dayvel, I saw those Foam By Mail folks. It's so damn cheap! Have you used any of their products? Any good (compared to other foam)?

Re: Lookin to kill flutter in my dorm room.
Also, this is my main mix environment when I can't get to my classical guitar teacher's basement studio off-campus. I guess pulling my mattress off and setting it behind me at an angle will help with that a bit. You guys are great for giving me all of these suggestions. These old New England schools...

Vassar, actually. Good guess.
Haha, stealing acoustical tile isn't the worst idea.

Alright, some good ideas. Thanks folks. I don't have a roommate, but I can find spare mattresses.

Re: Lookin to kill flutter in my dorm room.
Yeah, but condenser diaphrams don't do well when someone with wet beer breath tries to play American Idol. Plus we don't have sororities. Alas.

Lookin to kill flutter in my dorm room.
Any good suggestions? Would some cheap foam be an OK way? Where can I get cheap foam? I can't put up carpet or heavy stuff cause it would require serious mounting and I can't fuck up the walls at all unless I want to pay at the end of the semester. We're talking 12 foot high ceilings and all-plaster...

Re: I hate to admit it: I don't understand sidechains.
Interesting, and thanks for the responses. Concerning the de-essing and related methods: Now, so as I understand it, this is not compression of only certain frequency bands that we're talking about. This is compression of the entire signal when certain frequency bands pass the threshold. Right?

Collective fader movement: are the ratios retained?
Most faders on mixers/consoles have a logarithmic taper, right? Just ignore this post if they are actually normally linear. Anyway, imagine if you made a mix and all the faders are pretty low, but you like the sound a great deal, it's just too quiet. You have your master fader way up, but just need ...

I hate to admit it: I don't understand sidechains.
What is the purpose? What are some interesting/unusual ways to take advantage of a sidechain on my compressor? Is there any application that you can only accomplish with the aid of a sidechain?

Re: New EQ mag sucks other than Joel H appearance
Risking the possibility of lengthening this runaway train of kudos to the folks TapeOp: I agree with everyone else. After I started to get TapeOp I let all of my other audio mag subscriptions lapse. I'd rather just re-read my latest issue than leaf through a different, far less informative, and un-e...

Woah. You guys are awesome. I guess I really get it now. What book or class did you pick up to learn how trig applies to mic placement? If it's a book, where can I get it???

Re: Why isn't phase cancellation a problem in M/S?
Well I guess my questions deals more with levels. Say your polarity-flipped channel is the one on the far right. Wouldn't that side be quieter than the left because everywhere that the left mic is summing with the center mic the right mic would be negating?

Why isn't phase cancellation a problem in M/S?
Why doesn't the polarity-flipped mult track for the figure 8 mic cancel out some of the omni's signal? Or does it?

Ideas for Bass Management in Corners
Here's the plan: rebuild my old barn into a studio. Lofty goal (hehe), I know. But I need ideas for acoustics. While I've pretty much figured out how I want to do most of the surfaces, I haven't really dealt with bass buildup problems in my plans. I know you want mass in places where bass builds up,...
