Hey everyone - I thought I'd come back and post some results. We set up like the image above, with one small change. The line out of the bass wasn?t very good, so we put the amp right about where the word ?horns? is. It was not loud at all in the room, but the ribbon mics picked it up. The mics were...

the positive lobes are facing "west" right? Yes, that is correct. I'm not sure where everyone is going to stand. I think we will have to see what space is left after we get set up! I'm looking forward to doing this. I'm so much more excited by this sort of recording than the "close mic everything a...

What do you think of my Blumlein +2 setup?
Recording practice this weekend and I'm planning on setting up like this. Do you guys see anything that could be improved?
I'm doing the bass direct because I think it needs to have presence and immediacy more than most instruments.

Field Recording Mic Recommendations?
I'm looking to go out and do some ambient recordings of natural and urban surroundings. I've got a Zoom H4N, and I'm looking for some recommendations for decent microphones that might be suited to this task. I plan on experimenting with XY, ORTF, and binaural setups. What do you think? Small diaphra...

Thanks for the tips and links everyone! I didn't realize how much bigger and lower tensioned those snare drums were. I'll see what kind of big snares we can muster up.
BTW, has anybody seen the youtube videos of the Top Secret Drum Corps? These guys are pretty awesome.

How to record gallows/firing squad press roll
For our upcoming album, I need a section of a song to have a gallows or sort of colonial "ready, aim, fire" snare buzz roll. My first attempt was to do one ribbon room mic and make three passes at it with the drummer in a different location for each take (so it sounds like more of a drum corp.) The ...

The site is a little clunky, but the library of congress has tons. I especially like the William Gottlieb collection:
